Choose to Challenge

I am humbled to be among such remarkable women including my two colleagues Sarah Bratton Hughes and Carin Muhlbaum on Crain's New York Business' 2021 list of Notable Women on Wall Street. It comes right as the world celebrates #WomensHistoryMonth and International Women's Day with the theme of #ChooseToChallenge. 

We honor women during the month of March. Our history is rich with resilience, character and strength. Sacajawea led the Lewis and Clark expedition to the Pacific and back. Mother Teresa dedicated her life to caring for the sick. Marie Curie won the Nobel prize – twice. Amelia Earhart was an aviation pioneer. Rosa Parks helped initiate the civil rights movement. Ruth Bader Ginsberg changed America. NASA will put its first woman on the moon. We are pioneers, settlers, abolitionists and suffragists. Scientists, missionaries and politicians. We are leaders and we are not strangers to challenge and adversity.  

This year has been incredibly hard on women around the world. We have juggled working from home while caring for children, served on the frontlines in underpaid jobs with poor benefits and/or left the workforce entirely to care for families as schools and businesses closed. These issues of managing a complex world that’s often a battlefield of competing priorities far predate the #pandemic. However now these issues are on display for all the world to see. It is our collective mission to carry forward the legacy of the great women who precede us and raise awareness for those that have felt the brunt of the health and economic crisis. We are responsible to one another to challenge the status quo and properly value the roles women play in society.
