Choice to Make
Victim. It's a word that gets thrown around a lot these days. But what is rarely part of the discussion is moving forward and breaking the cycle. My mother was abused sexually and physically. It became part of her identity and she chose men and professions that perpetuated her as a sexual object that could be (and was) abused.
In turn, I was abused physically, sexually and emotionally. This abuse came from some of those same men and friends of the family. The events certainly impacted me. But I have made different choices in my life. The cycle ends with me, it has not been nor will it be, perpetuated onto the next generation.
We all have a story to tell. We all have a history. And we all have a choice. Our choice is to look back on that history and grow from it, or to look back and get stuck in it. One choice propels us forward and allows us to help others. The other choice pulls us down into the quagmire and turns focus purely on self - the victim who feels the world owes us a break rather than us breaking free of the world.
What choice will you make? Will you loose the chains and free others? Or will you pull in others with you as you sink deeper into the abyss? Hopefully you will choose the former.
