The Chinese People's Liberation Army conducts the "Joint Sword-2024B" exercise in the Taiwan Strait
On October 14, the PLA Eastern Theater Command is dispatching its troops of army, navy, air force and rocket force to conduct joint military drills code-named “Joint Sword-2024B” in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south and east of Taiwan Island.?
The Taiwan Strait is of great significance. It is a key waterway connecting China with major trading partners in Asia, Europe and North America. According to data from the China Maritime Safety Administration in 2023, the cargo throughput through this waterway has exceeded 1 billion tons, accounting for more than 40% of China's total maritime cargo transportation. In addition, the Taiwan Strait is also a vital energy transportation channel for China. More than 90% of the mainland’s?oil relies on maritime transportation, and the three major routes, the Middle East route, the African route and the Southeast Asian route, all cover the Taiwan Strait.
Taiwan is surrounded by the sea and has many important ports. Relevant data shows that the three ports of Kaohsiung, Taichung and Keelung, located on the west and north coasts of Taiwan Island, together account for more than 80% of Taiwan's cargo throughput, with Kaohsiung Port accounting for nearly half of the total.
Kaohsiung Port - Taiwan's largest commercial port
Kaohsiung Port is located in the main industrial park in the southwest of Taiwan Island. It is not only the largest commercial port on Taiwan Island, but also one of the top ten container shipping ports in the world. The port has two entrances and exits, namely the first port entrance and the second port entrance, with a total length of 18 kilometers. The container throughput of Kaohsiung Port accounts for about 70% of that of Taiwan Island, and the cargo throughput accounts for about 60% of the total. The number of passengers entering and leaving the port ranks third in Taiwan Island, second only to Keelung Port and Taichung Port. It has achieved navigation with more than 100 countries and regions in the world, and its import and export goods are rich and diverse, including?fertilizers, oil, coal, machinery, soybeans, wheat, aluminum, sugar, salt, cement, fruits and canned goods.
Taichung Port - Comprehensive Port
Taichung Port is located in the middle of the west coast of Taiwan Island. It is a comprehensive port integrating commercial, industrial and fishing ports. It is now the third largest "international port" in Taiwan, an important container transportation port and a grain and chemical import port. The waterway of Taichung Port is mainly composed of 4 channels, including the main channel (located between the south and north breakwaters, 300 meters wide, a one-way channel), the port approach channel (from the southwest of the port to the vicinity of the light pole of the south breakwater of Taichung Port, connected to the main channel, and is the prescribed channel for entering Taichung Port), the port exit channel (from the west end of the autonomous channel to the western waters of the port, it is the prescribed channel for leaving Taichung Port, and there is no separation area between it and the port approach channel) and the north-south channel (from the north U-turn area to the vicinity of berth 101, 200 meters wide). Taichung Port mainly transports bulk grains, fertilizers and other bulk cargoes.
Keelung Port - Energy import and export ports
Keelung Port is located at the northeastern end of Taiwan Island. It is a port built using the natural valley terrain. It has 41 docks, 1 port channel, and a total port area of 608.4 hectares. Keelung Port has two entrance and exit channels. The first entrance and exit is between the east and west breakwaters. The port faces the northwest direction. There is a navigation separation system to the north of the port, requiring all ships to use the corresponding channel when entering and leaving the port. The width of each channel is 700 meters. To ensure the efficient operation of the port, only one ship is allowed to enter the port. As the center of import and export trade?and international shipping?in northern Taiwan,?as well as?important energy import base of Taiwan, its main import and export goods include oil, coal, cotton, machinery, wood, grain, man-made fiber, etc.
