Chinese New Year - Year of the Tiger

Chinese New Year - Year of the Tiger

Chinese New Year

A date is decided by the Chinese Lunar Calendar, which is based on cycles of the moon and sun and is generally 21–51 days behind the Gregorian (internationally-used) calendar. Chinese New Year is a new moon day, usually the second after the winter solstice

This year, 2022, it falls on Tuesday, 1st February and is the year of the Tiger

I was born in 1974, also the year of the Tiger

People born in a year of the Tiger are thought to share it's main characteristics, brave, competitive and confident

Being honest, characteristics I have had to work on all my life, still do.

They definitely haven't come naturally

I have been very fortunate to work in an industry, that has enabled me to travel extensively throughout Asia

So, I have always embraced the opportunity to listen and learn about culture and tradition

In China, people go back home to be together with families, eat, drink, cook, visit extended family and friends to exchange good wishes and red envelopes

Usually filled with money and symbolise good wishes and luck for the new year ahead

Not exclusive to China, CNY is also celebrated in many other Asian counties, such as Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Korea, Japan and more besides

In fact, the occasion is observed and celebrated all over the world

Since my first trip to China in 2003, and seen the celebrations first hand, I have made it a tradition in my household

Every year, my wife, 2 daughters and I prepare, cook and devour a nice Asian inspired meal

We cherish family time together, whatever the occasion

Below, is my 1 year old daughter in 2004, wearing the traditional Chinese dress I bought her in Canton during one of my trips

Awww, isn't she cute, still makes my heart melt, although makes her cringe these days

She was born in 2003, year of the Goat and I would say, she has all the typical characteristics, creativity, intelligence, dependability, and calmness

She has also been known to 'ram' into the odd player at weekends while playing football, fairly of course (below)

Now 18 years old and studying at University, she will not be with us this year, which I find very sad

But, instead she will sample celebrations in China Town, Birmingham with friends

So, on the 1st February, to all my Asian friends, from my family to you and yours

Happy New Year -?Gong Xi Fa Cai

I am a horse, surrounded by two snakes and a rooster ?? ?? ?? ?? - it's like "Animal Farm". with a dash of "The Witcher", and a large dollop of "Monty Python". We laugh, we cry, but mostly we make secret plots to overthrow authority, then run away and blame it on someone else... I like Tiger people - my dad is a tiger, and he's my best mate - they have a very optimistic, but grounded energy. Lovely article. Nice to read something a bit different over lunch... ?? ?? ?? ??

Me: born in a year of the chinese horoscope symbol of "snake". This is a description I favor the most: "enigmatic, intuitive. Act on own judment. Remain private and reticent. Good at communication but say little." "Snakes represent the symbol of wisdom. They are intelligent and wise. Snakes are usually said to be great thinkers..." "Snake people prefer to work alone.. it is best to allow them their own space." Rest: see the description of Nick Raeburn Plus: combine that with the characteristics said for an aquarius ? Happy year of the tiger Kevin Bull ??

I’m a Rat- ‘Savvy, quick-witted, positive, intelligent, bright, versatile.’ I see some of that! Also a Water Rat (the year of your birth dictates your animal and element)- Alert, intelligent with good thinking, but conservative in practice. I’d agree!!

Year of the Snake - we are intelligent, wise and charming. They are usually good-looking and alluring. They are also deep thinkers, like to plan well and are determined in whatever they do. Snake people are quiet, reserved and are good at giving advice to others. I'd say that was spot on. We're humble too ?? Kevin great article mate and thanks for sharing that about you. Very interesting.
