?? China's social contract is changing

20% of 16-24 year-olds in China were unemployed in July of this year , which is 4x the youth unemployment rate of the US, and about 50% higher than the Euro area. Although this rate has now?come down to 18% , it’s still a sign that?the Chinese social contract is changing . The population is expected to give up freedom for economic prosperity, but instead, is met with incessant lockdowns and a crumbling tech sector.

Young people's prospects are a key to social stability. The pent-up energy of perceived unfairness can discharge internally and unpredictably - or can be channeled into aggression against made-up external threats. We all should hope that China gets this one right peacefully.
