Final jobs report before the election: The US added 161,000 jobs in Octoberand unemployment dropped to 4.9%, while wage growth accelerated to its strongest pace since the recession. These figures are likely to keep the Fed on track to raise interest rates in December — but not likely to sway the election one way or the other.
Wang Jianlin’s Dalian Wanda Group has agreed to buy Dick Clark Productions — the company behind shows like the Golden Globes, the Academy of Country Music Awards, “So You Think You Can Dance,” and the New Year’s Eve celebrations in New York — for about $1 billion. It’s the latest move in the Chinese company’s “multibillion-dollar spending spree in the entertainment industry” and will require regulatory approval. Wanda’s slew of recent purchases has already drawn calls for Justice Department review.
The Paris Agreement is now official. The landmark accord goes into effect today, “marking the first time that governments have agreed legally binding limits to global temperature rises.” The governments that have signed the agreement, including the US, China, India, and the EU, are obligated to keep global temperatures from rising more than two degrees Celsius. Now comes the truly difficult part: figuring out how to make it work.
A government probe into generic pharmaceutical price fixing is wider than previously thought.According to a report from Bloomberg, the Justice Department is investigating “more than a dozen companies and about two dozen drugs,” and Mylan, Teva (the world’s largest generic drugmaker), Actavis, and other companies have gotten subpoenas. Nearly 90% of drugs dispensed in the US are generic versions.
Amazon’s private label products are beating the competition. The company produces goods in over a dozen categories, including computer accessories, home goods, and grocery items, and is now the category leader in some areas, according to a 1010data report. Amazon Elements, which focuses on baby wipes, has risen 266% year over year and AmazonBasics, its battery brand, has risen 93% year over year and accounts for a third of all online battery sales.
