In this week’s podcast, Allen Hall , Joel Saxum , and Philip Totaro discussed Bonfiglioli’s?advanced servo motors featured?in PES Wind magazine, China’s offshore wind dominance, and some of the economic challenges facing U.S. offshore projects. And our?Wind Farm of the Week?is a real winner!
If you haven’t had a chance to listen to?Uptime?yet, we won’t judge. After all, it’s?Thanksgiving Day?in the U.S., which is the unofficial start of holiday hoopla, so we know things are a little extra-hectic.?
With Gratitude
It’s true, and we should say it more often:?we?thank you for inviting us?into your in-box every week. Wind energy is a busy, sometimes mind-boggling space, and we happen to think it’s very important. We try to offer short-but super-relevant reviews insight into?the news and technology you need?to do what you do.?
Sometimes, we try to be funny, or offer something you can toss into a non-work-related conversation. Need to contribute something at the dinner table today? Try the one about customers at an?abandoned Hertz Rental Car desk?picking their own rides or the?human dressed in a bear costume?who didn’t fool the insurance companies.?
Yes, those are real stories in the news; although not wind-related, they’re linked below.?TLDR:?We really appreciate our listeners and readers. Thanks. ?
Small Parts, Big Impact
You may not spend a lot of time thinking about reducing the?weight and size of asynchronous motors, but if you’re responsible for anything connected to an offshore wind turbine, you’re probably glad that Bonfiglioli’s engineers do.?
The Italian company designs and manufactures several components that offer?more control and improved performancein the offshore wind environment, including the AxiaVert and sensors such as the Z and W models.?
If?pitch, yaw, or wake balancing?matter to you, you’ll want to read this interview with Bonfiglioli 's Roberto Pasqualini.?
In this week’s Uptime, we discuss the company’s new motors, sensors and other components in a broader conversation about the importance of third-party suppliers.?Listen now.
What’s Next for the World Leader in Offshore Wind?
In 2019, China had?less than 5GW?of installed offshore wind; today it boasts 50%?of the world’s?offshore wind capacity. What happened??
As interesting as the recent history is, the important follow-up questions matter more:?what’s happening now, and?what’s next for China’s offshore development??
As the country follows its usual MO to?develop more advanced materials?it is also developing suppliers it calls “little giants” to support its next foray into - where? Brazil? More EU countries??Can the U.S. benefit?from China’s ever-expanding wind power and unique (communist) economies of scale? Phil thinks so.?
Get all the background in this week’s Uptime, and find out what we expect to see:?Listen now.
