China's cumulative poultry slaughtered 16.82 billion birds in 2023, up 4.2% from the previous year

According to China's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in 2023, the country's cumulative poultry slaughtered 16.82 billion birds, up 4.2% from the previous year; the output of poultry meat was 25.63 million tons, an increase of 4.9%; and the output of poultry eggs was 35.63 million tons, an increase of 3.1%.

Broiler

China Animal Husbandry Association monitoring data data show that in 2023, the cumulative number of white-feathered broilers and yellow-feathered broilers were 7.195 billion and 3.595 billion, respectively, an increase of 18.14% and a decline of 3.52% over 2022; white-feathered and yellow-feathered broilers produced 14.2937 million tons and 4.6731 million tons, respectively, an increase of 20.01% over 2022 and a decline of 0.85%.

The output of small white-feathered broilers(817) in 2022 is 2.232 billion, an increase of 9.36% from 2022; the output is 2.5568 million tons, an increase of 6.18% from 2022. In addition, by the small white-feathered broiler alternative and live bird control policy, yellow-feathered broiler slaughter and production have continued to decline in 2023, yellow-feathered broiler production in the total broiler production accounted for a record low again, from the mid-1990s to occupy half of the share of the shrinking to the current only 1/4 of the share.

Waterfowl

In terms of waterfowl, according to the survey statistics on waterfowl production in 23 major waterfowl-producing provinces across the country, the total output value of the waterfowl industry amounted to 217.241 billion yuan in 2023, an increase of 2.54% compared with 2022. The annual commercial meat duck slaughtered 4.218 billion, an increase of 5.40% over 2022; the total output value of meat duck 126.369 billion yuan, an increase of 5.04% over 2022. Laying ducks stocked 149 million, down 1.32% from 2022; duck egg production of 2.6705 million tons, an increase of 0.81% from 2022; total output value of eggs and ducks 37.7 billion yuan, down 3.03% from 2022. Commercial goose output of 515 million, an increase of 10.04% over 2022; meat goose output value of 53.172 billion yuan, an increase of 0.95% over 2022.

As far as regional production layout is concerned, the regional concentration of meat duck production is high, mainly concentrated in East China, whose output is as high as 2.61 billion, accounting for 62% of the national total output. Laying duck farming is mainly concentrated in central and eastern China, the egg production and output value of the two regions accounted for up to about 70% of the country. In terms of meat goose breeding, East China dominates, with an output of about 174 million, accounting for 1/3 of the national total, and the output value of South China is slightly higher than that of East China due to the existence of price advantage. As far as provinces are concerned, Shandong, Guangdong, Sichuan and Anhui are the most concentrated provinces in the production of commercial geese, with the total breeding volume of the four provinces accounting for 56.59% of the national total.

Poultry Feed

In 2023, the national production of meat poultry feed was 95.11 million tons, respectively, an increase of 7% year-on-year. Meat?poultry feed can be divided into three major echelons: Shandong, Guangdong annual output of more than 10 million tons, for the first echelon; Liaoning, Guangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu, Hebei, Fujian, Henan, Sichuan, Jiangxi 9 provinces annual output of more than 2 million tons, for the second echelon; Hunan, Jilin, Yunnan, Shanxi and other 20 regions with an annual output of less than 2 million tons, for the third echelon.

In 2023, the national egg and poultry feed 32.74 million tons, an increase of 2%. Egg and poultry feed production is dominated by the northern region. Ranked in the top three provinces of egg and poultry feed production for Hebei, Hubei and Shandong, the three annual output of 4.0656 million tons, 3.4703 million tons and 3.4437 million tons, respectively.
