China tightens graphite exports, Vietnam President visits Japan, COP28

MONDAY

Vietnamese President visits Japan

Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong pays a state visit to Japan, where the sides are expected to upgrade ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership, Hanoi's highest diplomatic status, one already given to China. The same status was granted to the U.S. when President Joe Biden visited in September.

TUESDAY

Indonesia election campaign period begins

Indonesian presidential candidates kick off their campaigns ahead of the election on Feb. 14. Three candidates -- Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, former Central Java Gov. Ganjar Pranowo and former Jakarta Gov. Anies Baswedan -- are competing to replace incumbent President Joko Widodo. The campaign period ends on Feb. 10.

China hosts supply-chain expo

The China International Supply Chain Expo opens in Beijing with the aim of safeguarding the stability of the globe's industrial supply chains amid calls for diversification away from China. Amazon, Intel and Honeywell are among the multinationals to be featured at the expo, which runs through Saturday.

Hong Kong lists first Saudi ETF

Hong Kong lists the first exchange-traded fund tracking some of Saudi Arabia's largest companies like Aramco. The listing comes as Hong Kong and China talk up Middle East opportunities amid rising tension with the West.

THURSDAY

COP28 starts

The 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference starts in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Leaders and officials from about 200 countries will discuss ways for humanity to tackle the consequences of global warming. Influential players like the U.S., China, India and the European Union will be watched closely as governments work toward drafting a joint statement over the course of two weeks. Businesses and civil society groups will also advocate for certain climate-related actions and initiatives.

China tightens export controls on key material for EV batteries

China begins requiring export permits for some graphite products, another attempt to control critical mineral supply in response to challenges to its global manufacturing dominance.
