MARKETS

Lvliang City to add 4.8 GW of solar PV installed capacity through 2025: The government of Lvliang City in Shanxi Province has released a plan that outlines a total planned capacity of 4.8 GW for solar PV projects, with a total annual electricity generation of approximately 635,620 million kWh. Part of its 14th Five-Year Plan, the plan includes 100 MW of PV projects from the 13th Five-Year Plan period that are still in progress, along with the newly planned centralized PV projects of 3.7 GW and distributed projects of 1 GW during the 14th Five-Year Plan period.

China’s solar power generation up 17.2% YoY in December 2023: Latest data from China’s National Bureau of Statistics shows that the country’s solar power generation grew 17.2% year-over-year (YoY) in December 2023. However, its growth slowed compared to the previous month, where it grew 35.4% YoY. Thermal power grew 9.3%, 3 percentage points faster than in November. Hydropower grew by 2.5%, 2.9 percentage points lower than in November. Nuclear power declined 4.2%, compared to a 2.4% decline in November. Wind power grew by 7.4%, compared to 26.6% growth YoY in November.

BUSINESS

Production / Cells & Modules

China produces 541 GW solar cells and 2.94 trillion kWh solar power in 2023: According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics, China produced 541.16 GW of solar cells in 2023, marking a significant 54% increase compared to the same period last year.

Also, the country’s solar power generation totaled 2.94 trillion kWh for the year, representing a notable 17.2% YoY growth compared to 2022. Wind power generation achieved 8.09 trillion kilowatt-hours, showing a 12.3% YoY increase. On the other hand, hydroelectric power generation decreased by 5.6%, totaling 11.409 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2023.

DAS Solar’s Weining base Phase 2 n-type PV module production line starts production: DAS SOLAR has announced that the 2nd phase of the PV module production line at its Weining Manufacturing Base has officially started production. The n-type TOPCon high-efficiency PV module facility currently has 2.4 GW of annual capacity. With a total investment of RMB 310 million ($43.2 million), the base is expected to generate RMB 2.5 billion ($348.7 million) in annual revenues for the company.

In December 2023, DAS Solar announced that the open-circuit voltage (VOC) of its n-type TOPCon high-efficiency cells has achieved 735 mV (see China Solar PV News Snippets). recently reported achieving 26.36% efficiency for its TOPCon 4.0 Plus high-efficiency cell (see DAS Solar Announces 26.36 Percent TOPCon Cell Efficiency).

ReneSola’s cell & module fab to come up Yandu: Manufacturer of green energy products ReneSola has announced its plans to set up a 5 GW cell and 10 GW module fab in the Yancheng High-tech Zone. The company will invest RMB 5 billion ($697.3 million) in the facility, which is scheduled to start construction in March and production in July 2024. The company said that it will launch tenders for civil engineering and equipment soon.

Production / Cells & Modules / TOPCon

Seraphim’s Jinzhai Phase II TOPCon module fab online: Solar cell and module manufacturer Seraphim Solar has announced that its Jinzhai Phase II high-efficiency TOPCon module fab is now online. The company says that this is an important step for Seraphim to deepen its layout, implement new development concepts and plan for future development.

In September 2023, Seraphim announced its plans to build a 10 GW PV module manufacturing facility in Guangzhou (see China Solar PV News Snippets).

Production / Cells & Modules / HJT

Huasun’s 3.6 GW HJT cell fab in Wuxi online: HUASUN HJT has announced that its 3.6 GW high-efficiency HJT solar cell manufacturing facility in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province has commenced operations. The company terms it the world’s first 210R HJT solar cell factory. It has invested a total of RMB 5.4 billion ($750.6 million) in the facility, with the 1st phase starting construction in March 2023. Huasun says that it will start construction of the 2nd phase at an opportune time.

Production / Monocrystalline Silicon

Tongwei Solar gets approval for 41 GW n-type cell fabs and Phase II of R&D center: Tongwei Solar has announced that the energy conservation reports for multiple photovoltaic manufacturing facilities have been approved by the Development and Reform Commission of Sichuan Province. These are:

  • 25 GW n-type monocrystalline silicon cell fab: It’s planned to be built in Shuangliu District, Chengdu City, Sichuan. The company plans to construct 50 production lines for monocrystalline silicon cells, with the construction scheduled to from January 2024 to August 2025.
  • 16 GW n-type monocrystalline silicon cell fab: It’s planned to be built in Dongpo District, Meishan City, Sichuan, consisting of 32 production lines for monocrystalline silicon cells, with construction scheduled from January 2024 to October 2025.
  • Tongwei Solar PV Industry Technology Research and Development Center (Phase II): The company plans to construct a 1 GW heterojunction-copper interconnect solar cell R&D line and 3 efficient perovskite-heterojunction tandem solar cell R&D lines with a total capacity of 100 MW. The construction is scheduled from January 2024 to September 2024.

Tongwei Solar recently unveiled its new G12R TNC series modules in Frankfurt, Germany (see China Solar PV New Snippets).

Production / PV Tracker

Bofang New Energy’s 10 GW PV tracker facility online: Solar tracker manufacturer Bofang New Energy has announced that its 10 GW PV tracker base in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province has started production. The company has invested about RMB 3 billion ($417 million) in the facility that can produce 450,000 tons annually. The company says that it has contracts for 3.5 GW in hand, valued at RMB 1.5 billion ($208.5 million).

Production / Equipment

INNO LASER releases LSO equipment: Laser and PV automation equipment manufacturer INNO LASER has announced the launch of its laser selective oxidation (LSO) equipment. Being introduced as a concept in October 2023, this newly launched equipment uses the company’s own third-generation short-wave ultrafast picosecond laser. Based on its ultrafast solid-state laser platform, the company says the equipment offers extremely high industrial stability while offering high laser beam quality.

Supply / Cells & Modules

Jietai Solar wins 550 MW solar cell order: Jietai Solar has announced the signing of a framework agreement with overseas customers for the supply of its cells. According to the agreement, Jietai Solar will provide 550 MW of n-type and p-type cell products to the contracted customers in 2024. The company says the signing will help it penetrate more deeply into the overseas PV market, opening up target markets such as the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States.

In November 2023, Jietai announced the launch of its n-type “MoNo” series high-efficiency cells (see China Solar PV News Snippets).

Supply / Cells & Modules / HJT

QW Solar signs 150 MW HJT module deal: QW Solar has announced that it has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Lei Shing Hong Energy for the year 2024. As per the agreement, the 2 parties plan to deepen cooperation in the overseas market expansion of QW Solar’s high-efficiency HJT modules. The total annual procurement value for raw materials of QW Solar’s photovoltaic modules by Lei Shing Hong will be about RMB 100 million ($13.98 million). Furthermore, the collaboration aims to facilitate the overseas purchase of 150 MW of QW Solar’s high-efficiency HJT modules through overseas projects. In the field of energy storage, the cooperation will actively promote the sales and promotion of pack battery and energy storage cabinets.

Supply / Equipment

Shuangliang Eco-Energy to supply equipment for Oman silicon material facility: Shuangliang Eco-Energy has announced that the company and its wholly-owned subsidiary have won the bid to supply production equipment to United Solar Polysilicon (FZC) SPC. The equipment will be used at United Solar’s 100,000-ton high-purity silicon material factory. The $58,320,592 order includes multiple sets of ingot reduction furnaces and tail gas jacket devices, green electric intelligent hydrogen production equipment, and lithium bromide unit devices. The factory is located in the Sohar Freezone in Oman.

PV Power Plants

CECEP Solar to raise funds for 900 MW PV project: CECEP Solar, a holding subsidiary of China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group, plans to issue convertible bonds to unspecified investors to raise about RMB 2.95 billion ($411.5 million). It plans to use the net proceeds to construct 6 PV plants, with a combined capacity of 900 MW. The 6 planned projects are as follows: Chabuchaer County in Xinjiang with 300 MW, Jimusaer County in Xinjiang with 150 MW, Yangzhou Zhenwu County in Yangzhou City with 150 MW, Guanlin County in Guizhou Province with 100 MW, Ceheng County in Guizhou Province with 2 projects for a total capacity of 200 MW.

Recently, CECEP Solar forecasted its 2023 net profit to increase 8.18%-19.00% YoY (see China Solar PV News Snippets).

Canadian Solar’s 1st MW-scale BIPV project grid-connected: Canadian Solar Inc. has announced that its recently completed MW-scale Building Integrated PV (BIPV) project has been grid-connected. The project, located in Xiangcheng District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, is the company’s 1st MW-scale project that utilizes over 7,000 sq. m. of rooftop space with a capacity of approximately 1.27 MW.

The BIPV project is expected to generate a cumulative electricity output of 31.23 million kWh over 25 years. This is equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 27,000 tons, which is akin to planting 1.489 million trees.

Floating PV Power Plants

Mibet New Energy’s 2 offshore PV projects launched: Mibet New Energy has announced that it has launched 2 new offshore FPV systems in the Dalipu Island and Dongshan Island offshore test areas. The company is jointly promoting these demo projects for marine empirical applications with LSMRI.

Energy Storage Systems

11 JinkoSolar SunGiga ESS installed in Zhejiang: JinkoSolar has announced that 11 of its SunGiga liquid cooling C&I energy storage systems (ESS) have been installed in Zhejiang. Zhejiang Jingpeng Zirconium Technology Co., Ltd has installed 5 units of Sungiga ESS at its facility with a capacity of 500 kW/1075 kWh. Zhejiang Lanyu Digital Technology Co., Ltd. has installed 6 units with 600 kW/1290 kWh capacity.

JinkoSolar says the SunGiga ESS helps its customers smoothen peak energy demand by shifting energy demand to the battery during high-demand periods. In addition, it also helps optimize energy use as the battery can be charged during periods when electricity is the cheapest, most abundant, and provided from clean sources such as solar. Once charged during off-peak hours, the battery can be programmed to discharge electricity during peak energy demand periods when power is expensive.

Recently, a notable Chinese local media publication said that JinkoSolar could regain the top spot in the industry for 2023 (see China Solar PV News Snippets).

Trina’s Vertex N 700W modules power PV-energy storage project in desert region: Trina Solar has announced that 30 MW of its Vertex N 700W modules have been used in a recently completed integrated photovoltaic (PV) energy storage project in the desert region of northwest China. The company says that the Vertex N 700W modules have been widely used in various settings for great reliability, especially in rugged conditions.

Once grid-connected, the plant is expected to generate 1.45 billion kWh of power, save 442,000 tons of standard coal as well as 1.206 million tons of CO2, and cut 232 tons of sulfur dioxide and 260 tons of nitrogen oxides.

Trina Storage recently announced that it has been ranked among the global top 5 storage providers and integrators by BloombergNEF (see China Solar PV News Snippets).

Raising Funds

Drinda to issue H shares; to list on Hong Kong Stock Exchange: Automotive instrument panel assembly manufacturer Drinda has announced that it plans to issue shares (H shares) overseas and apply for listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The company said that the funds raised will be used for overseas production capacity construction of high-efficiency cells, overseas market expansion and overseas sales operation system construction, global R&D center construction and supplementary working capital. Drinda is expected to become the 1st PV cell company to have both A and H shares listed at the same time.

Risen Energy’s 0BB Hyper-ion module receives TüV SüD certification: Solar panel manufacturer 东方日升 has announced via WeChat that its zero busbar (0BB) heterojunction (HJT) Hyper-ion module has received TüV SüD certification. The IEC environmental tests were said to be 3 times stricter than the normal conditions, where the module achieved a maximum power degradation rate of 5% or less. The company says that its product showed excellent weather resistance and reliability, reaching industry-leading levels in the selection and application of materials and processes.

Recently, Risen was one of the 6 companies to launch the 700W+ Photovoltaic Open Innovation Ecological Alliance with an aim to standardize the design and manufacture of 700W+ solar modules (see Trina Solar Announces New Solar PV Standard Coalition).

Trina Solar’s Vertex S+ 450W module delivers 3.07% higher energy yield per watt: Solar module manufacturer 天合光能 has released the results of a study that says the company’s Vertex S+ 450W modules delivered 3.07% higher energy yield per watt. The 12-month empirical study, carried out by the China General Certification Center in Haikou, Hainan Province, also reported that these modules exhibited a lower operating temperature (0.75℃) and lower annual degradation (0.81%) compared to reference modules. The site is known for its high-temperature and high-humidity climate conditions. The company said that the modules showed exceptional reliability, with no defects observed in EL images, suggesting a longer lifespan and higher output efficiency.

Recently, Trina Solar added a thin dual-glass Vertex S+ series module to its portfolio for C&I scale applications (see Trina Solar Expands Its Vertex S+ Module Series).

SunketSolar’s n-type TOPCon modules get TüV SüD CB certification: Solar PV manufacturer SunketSolar has announced that it has secured TüV SüD CB certification for its n-type TOPCon single and double glass PV modules. The TüV SüD tests were conducted in accordance with IEC 61215:2021 technical standards and specifications. The company’s modules successfully passed multiple tests such as DH1000, TC200, and UV sequence.

Canadian Solar PV Test Laboratory accredited by CNAS: Canadian Solar has announced that the Canadian Solar Inc. Photovoltaic Test Laboratory (CPTL) has received accreditation from China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment (CNAS). The company said that the CNAS experts affirmed the quality management system operation and testing capabilities of CPTL after a 2-day comprehensive review. All 28 testing items applied for assessment passed the on-site review. Canadian Solar said that with this accreditation, CPTL has successfully expanded the new IEC 61730-2 standard released in September 2023.

Huasun’s HJT modules get Indian BIS certification: Solar panel manufacturer HUASUN HJT has announced that its Himalaya G12 series heterojunction (HJT) modules have obtained the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification. The company says that the modules comply with IS 14286, IS/IEC 61730-I, IS/IEC 61730-II and other Indian standards, qualifying them for local bidding and other large-scale projects in India. The company claims that its Himalaya G12-132 HJT solar module produces over 750 W of power with an efficiency of 24.16%, and has been certified by TüV SüD.

Huasun recently announced the commissioning of the 5 GW high-efficiency HJT cell and module facility at its Hefei base (see China Solar PV News Snippets).
