China China Mobile, Huawei and partners claim a first with 1.2Tbps network launch.

In a joint project of China Mobile, Huawei, Tsinghua University and Cernet, an ultra-high capacity 1.2Tbps backbone network has been switched on this week, linking Beijing, Wuhan and Guangzhou with a 3,000km route, Global Times reports.

The partners claimed the launch represented a world-first commercial-ready 1.2Tbps backbone, with the project forming a significant part of China’s Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI) programme. The network – set to supersede existing 400Gbps capacity backbone infrastructure – had been operating in trial mode since the end of July.
