China Issued A New Industry Standard For Lithium-Ion Batteries

On November 18, the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) Electronic Information Division issued the Lithium-ion Battery Industry Standard Conditions (2021) (draft) and Administrative Measures for the Announcement of Lithium-ion Battery Specification (2021) (draft) for public comments to further strengthen lithium-ion battery industry management and to promote industry transformation and upgrading as well as technological progress. The Standard Conditions provide standardized guidance on many aspects of the operation of lithium-ion battery companies and projects. Simultaneously, the document specifies the performance of almost every type of lithium-ion battery and battery pack, including consumer and motive power batteries.

Consumer, motive power and energy storage battery: the energy density of consumer battery must be greater than 260Wh / kg, and the energy density of battery pack shall not be less than 200Wh / kg; High energy motive power battery shall not be less than 180Wh / kg, and the energy density of battery pack shall not be less than 120Wh / kg; The energy storage battery shall not be less than 145 Wh / kg, the battery pack shall not be less than 110 Wh / kg, the cycle life shall be more than 5000 times, and the capacity retention rate shall be more than 80%.

Because the general energy density of the LFP battery pack monomer is only 160-180Wh/kg, some companies still face an insurmountable gap. As the cathode material, that is, LFP materials, has the greatest influence on the performance of an LFP battery. If the "Industry Standard Conditions" are formally implemented, downstream battery plants' demand for upstream high-performance materials will increase to meet technical standards. Companies with superior technology, scale, and capital will benefit even more, and market concentration will rise. This standard may cause some cross-industry companies to face challenges, and the rate of LFP production expansion may be slowed to some extent.?
