Implications of Chile's New National Lithium Strategy ( Fernando Prats )

"Chile is the world's second-largest lithium producer, only behind Australia, and has one of the largest reserves worldwide. Lithium is a crucial mineral for the construction of rechargeable batteries, essential for the emerging electric vehicle industry. In a context of an energy matrix transition that seeks to abandon fossil fuels, lithium has become a key mineral in the value chain, which is why it has been called white gold.

Given that the Boric government will seek greater state participation in lithium exploitation, two caveats must be made. The first is that the creation of the state company that would carry out this task must be approved by Congress, which has already vetoed some of Boric's projects. The second is that the existing state-owned copper (Codelco) and mining (Enami) companies will be responsible for carrying out this plan meanwhile."?

Lula's visit to China -?What does it mean for Brazil and for the rest of the world? ( Ana Luisa Chartier )

"The Brazil of Lula wants to be a country that wants its geopolitical independence and aims to settle its own alliances, with the Global North and the Global South. This is surely a breakthrough from the Bolsonaro administration, which had a clear preference for a close relationship with the United States and Isra?l. To create its own path and international relationships puts Brazil back in the game, and Lula’s visit to China was a proof of it. Surely with its non-alignment position and its ecological discourse Lula wants to achieve his big dream for Brazil in global politics : a seat in the UN Security Council.

For sure, Brazil becoming a diplomatic power can bring political prestige, financial advantages and opportunities in general. The many accords signed between Chinese and Brazilian public organisations and private companies are a push-up on (a) China-Brazil relations, (b) in transport and infrastructural market, (c) in energetic sustainable models and (d) in credit and financial advantages. The most remarkable financial strategy set in this meeting was surely the use of the CIPS as a mechanism to shorten transaction costs in Brazil-China trade, by negotiating in their own currencies and not the dollar."

Strengthening regional integration or a return to ideological blocks in Latin America? ( Elin. Roberts )

"On the 5th April 2023, Argentina’s Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Santiago Cafiero, tweeted a?letter?stating that Argentina intends to rejoin UNASUR. Furthermore, on the 6th of April 2023, Lula approved?decree?11.475 stating that Brazil will return to being a member of UNAUR of the 6th May 2023 when the decree enters into vigour. No mention was given regarding Argentina and Brazil’s future relationship with PROSUR.

Thinking about the future of these two institutions and general integration measures in Latin America, it is evident that there are ideological differences that hamper cooperation and strong integration throughout the region. In addition to this, despite both institutions (UNASUR and PROSUR) having ambitious objectives regarding integration, both of them have been very symbolic with a lack of measured success.?"
