China Green Iron & Steel Conference, Shandong.
China's Steel industry contributes to 15% of the China's national carbon emissions and more than 60% of the industries global carbon emissions and so should be a big Scope 3 item for consideration for Australia's Iron Ore & Thermal/ Metallurgical Coal exporters.
How can Australia work more closely with China to solve this?
Earlier this month the 2024 Steel Industry Low-Carbon Development Seminar was held in Rizhao, Shandong Province with more than 300 experts from the Steel Industry in attendance - and some strong representation from Australia's miners.
The CISA "Low-Carbon Work Promotion Committee" were joined by relevant government departments and institutions, upstream and downstream enterprises in the domestic and foreign steel industry chain, and energy-saving, environmentally friendly and low-carbon technology and equipment suppliers.
The short & sweet theme of the meeting was "Exchange of green and low-carbon steel technology, sharing of steel low-carbon green development experience, and exploration of the path of steel low-carbon green development".
At the meeting the "Roadmap for China's Steel Industry's Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality" report was released and experts presented on topics such as "Exploration of Building a Full CCS Industry Chain under the Dual Carbon Strategy: A "Possible Triangle" Perspective".
At the same time, the Steel Low-carbon Service Platform built by the China Iron and Steel Association was officially launched. The platform is a comprehensive service window for steel companies aiming to provide low-carbon development support.
Rizhao is the core area for the transformation and upgrading of the Shandong's steel industry and is the main receiving area for Baowu Group's steel sector. Shandong's steel production capacity is close to 80 million tons, about half of which is located in the coastal area of Rizhao.
The event was hosted by the China Iron and Steel Association and the Metallurgical Industry Branch of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. During the event a training session on the green and low-carbon transformation capacity building of the steel industry was also be held.
Jiang Wei, Deputy Secretary General of Steel Association, Zhang Dianhu, Vice Mayor of Rizhao, Secretary of Party Committee of Shandong Iron and Steel Group Rizhao Co., Ltd. Chen Yunpeng, General Manager of Rizhao, delivered speeches.
Mao Xinping, academic of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Low Carbon Work Promotion Committee introduced the update of the "dual carbon" vision and low carbon technology roadmap of China's steel industry.
The meeting was chaired by Feng Chao, Deputy Secretary-General of the Steel Association, and Li Yu, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Science and Technology and Environmental Protection of the Steel Association.
Xiao Peng, General Manager of CCID Group and Chairman of CCID, Zhang Longqiang, Party Secretary and Dean of Metallurgical Industry Information Standard Research Institute, Chopin Guo, Deputy Party Secretary and Vice Dean of Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute, Chi Guiyou, Executive President and Secretary-General of Hebei Metallurgical Industry Association, Chen Jianhua, President of Jiangsu Metallurgical Industry Association, Ren Hao, Senior Advisor of Shandong Iron and Steel Industry Association, Wei Wuqiang, Deputy General Manager of Shaanxi Iron and Steel Group Co., Ltd., Deputy Director of Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Working Committee of Steel Association, Zhang Peixuan, Senior Vice President of Ouye Cloud Commerce also attended the meeting.
