China Fisheries & Seafood Expo 2024: A Global Hub for the Seafood Industry

After several interruptions in recent years, the 26th China Fisheries and Seafood Expo (CFSE) is set to launch this month. CFSE is the premier global gathering for seafood professionals, offering opportunities to expand business in the seafood industry. The event attracts importers, distributors, retailers, food service operators, seafood processors, aquaculture producers, and fishing fleet operators from around the world.

China: The Heart of the Seafood Industry

As the largest global producer and exporter of aquaculture products (OECD-FAO, 2021), China also leads in fish and seafood consumption (USDA, 2019). With rising per capita seafood consumption, Chinese consumers are increasingly purchasing high-quality, value-added seafood products. Seafood plays a key role in China’s food security strategy, with mariculture seen as a “blue granary” that helps address the country’s food security challenges.

Although China’s foodservice revenue declined by 6.3% in 2022, the sector rebounded strongly in 2023 with a 20.4% increase. Seafood prices remained affordable, further boosting the market. In 2024, revenue from fish and seafood is projected to reach US$97.11 billion, with an expected annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.56% from 2024 to 2029. By 2025, the market is expected to grow by 5.8%, reaching US$100.6 billion, with sales projected to reach 50,015.3 thousand metric tonnes. Retail data from 2020 shows Chinese consumers prefer fresh and frozen processed seafood.

Qingdao: A Hub for the Seafood Business

Qingdao’s seafood industry is booming, driven by its rapid economic growth. Over a third of China’s annual international seafood trade takes place in Qingdao, with imports and exports valued at over US$8 billion annually. Since the first CFSE in 1996, Qingdao has been the event’s permanent venue since 2014, thanks to its large population of processors and seafood importers.

In 2021, the expo moved to its new home in the Hongdao Economic Zone of Greater Qingdao, boasting modern designs, state-of-the-art facilities, and space for 6,100 booths across 10 exhibit halls.

China Fisheries and Seafood Expo: Key Highlights

CFSE is Asia’s largest seafood exhibition and one of the most dynamic seafood fairs globally. In 2018, over 33,000 visitors attended the event, with even greater success in 2019, when more than 1,700 companies from 52 countries participated, filling all 10 exhibit halls. The exhibition space grew by 22% to 45,000 square meters in 2019.

The 2024 edition is expected to break records, with over 40,127 seafood professionals from 120+ countries anticipated to participate across 110,000 square meters of exhibition space.
