China – a challenge to global governance

Welcome back to the Liberal Newspage!?

China’s challenge to global governance?

Is China rewriting the rules of global governance? Global governance addresses worldwide issues like economic interdependence, climate change, and pandemics. It involves both governments and non-state actors in decision-making and is based on Western principles such as market competition, human rights, democracy, and transparency. ?

Beijing is pushing its own values—like state control and non-interference—onto the world stage: it wants to raise security up the global scale of fundamental values, above human rights, freedom, and democracy. ?

ELF’s new policy paper explores how China’s approach to global governance has major implications for human rights and international cooperation. It calls on the EU to respond strategically through coalition-building, promotion of multilateralism, and more proactive policies in Asia to ensure that democracy and freedom remain central to global governance. For a deeper dive into China’s growing influence on global governance, read the full paper by Hans van Baalen Fellow Dr Laia Comerma here.?

ELF Liberal Awards celebrates this year's winners during ALDE Congress?

Every year, the European Liberal Forum and the ALDE Party host the Liberal Awards to highlight the champions of liberal values across Europe and recognise the work they have done for our liberal family.?This year is no exception: during the ALDE Party Congress in Estoril, Portugal,?ELF awarded trophies in two categories - Liberal of the Year & Rising Star.?

Rising Star - Aleksandra Kot?

The Rising Star award is an important acknowledgement of those in the liberal movement who may be new to politics but are making a name for themselves by defending liberal values. Rising Stars are crucial to the future of liberalism, winning elections and achieving our manifestos as liberals. In 2024,?the Rising Star Award was presented to?Aleksandra Kot, a Polish politician and lawyer, the youngest member of the Polish Parliament. In the last seven years, she has been actively involved in promoting liberal ideas, particularly among young people. With her hard work and dedication, she became a symbol of the younger generation's involvement in politics.? ?

Liberal of the Year?- MEP Ilhan Kyuchyuk?

The Liberal of the Year Award aims to celebrate established liberals who may have achieved incredible and important things?in defending even basic principles of democracy.?Ilhan Kyuchyuk has been a prominent figure in the liberal family and has dedicated nearly a decade to strengthening the ALDE Party and fostering liberalism across Europe. However, this Award recognises not only these efforts but also his dedication to standing up and defending democracy in times of difficulties, even when those difficulties come from within.?? ?
