The inaugural conference of the Home Building Materials Quality Specialized Committee of the China Association for Standardization (referred to as the “Home Building Materials Quality Specialized Committee”) took place in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. This committee is dedicated to developing and revising standards, facilitating academic exchanges, providing technical consulting, offering popular science training, and conducting research related to the quality of home building materials both domestically and internationally. Its primary goal is to establish a platform that acts as a bridge, integrating industry resources across the supply chain, enhancing competitiveness through standards, fostering innovation, and supporting the high-quality development of the home building materials sector. The committee's secretariat is based at the China Academy of Building Research Co., Ltd.
In 2023, China's home building materials industry surpassed 800 million yuan in market size. Data from the 2022 national quality inspection of indoor decoration materials, conducted by the State Administration for Market Regulation, revealed that out of 1,099 batches of indoor decoration materials from 974 enterprises, 128 batches failed quality tests, resulting in an 11.6% failure rate. The unqualified products included ceramic disc seal faucets, smart toilets, ceramic toilets, ceramic tiles, and impregnated paper veneer artificial boards. Of the 90 items inspected within these categories, 24 were safety-related, representing 26.7% of the total items. Notably, 42 of the 128 unqualified batches had safety issues, accounting for 32.8% of the failed batches.

According to the China Consumers Association’s "2023 Data on Complaints Received by National Consumer Associations," there were 31,351 complaints about housing and building materials, with 18,266 specifically related to decoration materials. The proportion of consumers feeling uncertain about these products is 14.8%. Common complaints revolve around after-sales service and quality issues, including information asymmetry, process opacity, and difficulties in verifying product authenticity.
Jiang Bo, Director of the Home Building Materials Quality Specialized Committee, highlighted that quality issues in home building materials are often due to inadequate standards and their implementation. There is a pressing need for collaboration across various sectors, including standard formulation, production, testing, and certification, to enhance the industry standard system. The committee plans to focus on developing group standards, overseeing quality inspection and certification, and training professionals in standardization. At the conference, the committee announced new initiatives, including the development of group standards for product quality grading, a training program for standard reviewers, and the “2024 Consumption Brand Survey Report of the Home Decoration Industry.”
