China: 26 MW Wind Turbine Produced, Test Rig Launched for Turbines of up to 35 MW

Mingyang Smart Energy has initiated the type certification process for its 18+ MW offshore wind turbine. Dongfang Electric Corporation has just produced a 26 MW wind turbine with a rotor diameter of more than 310 metres. To accommodate testing next-generation wind turbines, China’s Sany Renewable Energy has launched a new test rig at its wind power testing centre – and this test rig is for wind turbines of up to 35 MW. World’s First 26 MW Offshore Wind Turbine Rolls Off Production Line

Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) has produced a 26 MW offshore wind turbine in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China.

The wind turbine’s hub centre is 185 metres high, equivalent to a 63-story residential building, while the designed rotor diameter exceeds 310 metres, with a swept area equivalent to 10.5 standard football fields, according to DEC.

The company says the turbine is tailored for areas with wind speeds of 8 m/s and above and has strong resistance to typhoons and corrosion. With average winds of 10 m/s, a single turbine could generate 100 GWh of clean energy annually, enough to power 55,000 homes, DEC said.

TüV NORD to Certify Mingyang’s 18 MW Offshore Wind Turbine

Mingyang Smart Energy has signed a contract with TüV NORD to certify its MySE18.X-260, which the company says is currently the world’s most powerful offshore wind turbine.

The certification, according to the internationally recognised standard IECRE OD501, covers the rotor-nacelle assembly.

With the type certification, TüV NORD is verifying that the design and performance of the Minyang wind turbine meet international standards and guidelines.

This includes an evaluation of the technical documentation, the analysis of the structural integrity and the mechanical systems, and the inspection of the electrical systems. Additionally, the safety aspects of the turbine will be checked, said TüV NORD.

TüV NORD will also inspect the manufacturing to evaluate whether the production of the main components and the final assembly of the hub and nacelle of the offshore wind turbine are in line with the design requirements and are ready for series production.

Test Bench for 35 MW Wind Turbines Goes Into Operation in China

Sany Renewable Energy has put a new wind turbine test rig into operation at its wind power testing centre in China.

The company said that this was “China’s first and the world’s largest” test bench, capable of simulating the full lifecycle of wind turbines up to 35 MW.

Equipped with six 100-tonne hydraulic cylinders, it applies multi-directional, coordinated loads across six degrees of freedom, allowing for extreme, multi-axis stress testing, according to the company.

With a maximum driving torque of 36 MNm and a bending moment of up to 80 MNm, the test bench accurately simulates complex weather conditions and extreme working environments, withstanding typhoon-level winds, said Sany.

More than 20 years ago when we sold a wind turbine most of the turbines were less than 1MW and the max were 5MW. It was not possible to imagine more than 10MW machine. Now it seems no limit for the max size of a wind turbine for offshore business. I have no idea how long a wind blade would be for 25MW generator.
