Chile’s Strawberry Harvest Gains Momentum Amid Global Market Shifts

As the strawberry picking season progresses in Chile, the industry is experiencing a notable uptick in activity and pricing dynamics, according to a recent report by S&P Global. With the harvest expected to continue robustly until March, Chilean growers are optimistic about the current season’s yield, which is projected to produce approximately 45,000 to 50,000 metric tons of frozen strawberries.
Strengthening Prices Amid Global Tariff Changes
The prices for Chilean strawberries have shown a slight increase compared to January, which is considered favorable for local growers. However, changes in international trade policies could further influence these figures. Notably, the imposition tariffs by the United States on Mexican strawberry imports could shift the dynamics significantly. Given this context, Chile, benefiting from a free trade agreement with the U.S., stands poised as a promising alternative supplier of frozen strawberries to the American market.
Market Responses and Price Variability
As of mid-February, large Chilean processing plants were actively offering frozen strawberries at slightly increased prices, primarily targeting retailers and exporters. This represents a slight increase from the prices observed in mid-January. Interestingly, smaller and medium-sized packers have been able to offer lower prices, potentially influenced by competitive offers from international markets like Egypt.
Robust Demand in the Post-Pandemic Market
The demand for frozen strawberries has remained high this season, reflecting a broader recovery and stabilization of the global market post-COVID-19. “International demand has been good so far, I think that the world is starting to come to a normal stage after Covid-19,” commented a Chilean fruit processor at the onset of the strawberry season in November. In 2024, Chile exported a total of 45,700 metric tons of frozen strawberries, marking an 11.5% increase from the previous year. The United States remained the largest importer of Chilean frozen strawberries, with shipments totaling 23,800 metric tons, up 10% year-on-year.

The strategic positioning of Chile in the global strawberry market underscores the importance of monitoring trade policies and market demands. For businesses looking to secure a reliable supply of high-quality frozen strawberries, Chile offers a viable and competitive source.
