Children’s Day 2022 - The Role Video Games Play in Our Childhood

For many, video games have played a large role in developing their childhood. Despite video games being stigmatised, there are many positive outcomes to playing video games at a young age.

This Children’s Day, let us explore how video games shape and mould our children’s upbringing.

The creative and huge expanse of video games could get young minds churning and creative juices flowing with ease. At such an impressionable age, children are more drawn to motion and colours, so what better way to capture their attention than an interactive video game, right??

Plus, research has shown that playing video games as a child could improve a person’s memory as they get older. This is because video games can serve as brain stimulants that can prevent many potential memory-related issues like dementia or Alzheimers.

Other than that, video games hone problem-solving skills, which is a great trait to nurture from a young age. This is especially true when playing strategy or role-playing games, as players would have to fill in the shoes of a character and help solve their problems.

In many ways, video games create a sense of responsibility and independence among their players as well.

Some RPGs or strategy games that are fitting for children are Zelda: Breath of The Wild, Minecraft, any of the Pokemon games, and even games in the Kingdom Hearts series.

As always, it is recommended that you supervise your children as they play, or join in and play with them.

Naturally, parents tend to worry that their children might face health issues by sitting in front of a screen for long periods of time, but with modern technology, we can put that concern to rest.

The creation of virtual reality and fitness-centric games has ensured that children can engage in entire worlds simply by moving their bodies.

As long as you have gaming equipment or consoles that could handle VR, you’re good to go! Samples include the Oculus headset or PSVR, as well as the simple Nintendo Switch joycons that are already part of the console itself.

Besides physical workouts, you could also help your young ones to exercise their social skills by allowing them to explore the world of social simulation games. There’s always a risk involved when it comes to letting your children on the internet with strangers, but with proper supervision and constant communication, you can minimise the potential dangers that are circulating in online video games.

Social sim games you could explore with your kids would be Animal Crossing, Roblox and Tomodachi Life amongst many others.

If you’re thinking of getting a gift for your children or perhaps your nieces and nephews this Children’s Day, games like Ring Fit Adventure, Just Dance or Beat Saber are great for practising motor skills.

As such, video games have been a part of us for most of our lives—more so for today’s generation—where we can see remnants of video game culture instilled in fashion and wearables like game watches and Y2K culture.

In conclusion, video games have and will continue to play an important role in shaping our children’s childhood. Be it through core values or the sentimental value of physical gaming accessories, video games will forever be a part of our lives both culturally and for our growth into adulthood.
