Children's cold that cannot be ignored.

Children's cold that cannot be ignored.

Almost all children have been infected with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) at least once before the age of 2. For most healthy children, RSV is like a cold. However, some children infected with RSV will become seriously ill.

What is RSV?

RSV belongs to the pulmonary virus genus of Paramyxoviridae, and is one of the many viruses that cause respiratory diseases. This kind of virus often occurs in autumn and winter, and is easy to spread among infants and young children.

Usually, RSV causes colds, which may be followed by bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Symptoms usually last an average of 5-7 days.

What does the baby show when he has difficulty breathing?

? Fast or short breathing;

? There is a grunt when breathing;

? The chest drops with each breath;

? The skin turns blue or purple due to lack of oxygen.

Which babies are at greater risk of RSV?

? In the high incidence season of RSV, the age is ≤ 12 weeks;

? Preterm infants or low birth weight infants (especially infants born before 29 weeks of gestation);

? Chronic lung disease of premature infants;

? Infants with certain types of heart defects;

? People with weakened immune system due to disease or treatment;

? Other risk factors include mother smoking during pregnancy, exposure to second-hand smoke at home, history of allergies and eczema, no breastfeeding, and being with children in a nursery or crowded living environment.

Under what circumstances does the baby need to go to the hospital in time?

RSV is a self limited disease, and almost all children can recover from RSV infection by themselves. However, if the baby has the following conditions, he/she should go to the hospital in time:

? Symptoms of bronchiolitis (as shown in the table above);

? Dehydration symptoms;

? Respiratory arrest or dyspnea;

? The tongue, lips or skin are gray or blue;

? Activity and alertness are significantly reduced;

? Symptoms worsen or do not begin to improve after 7 days;

? Fever (rectal temperature ≥ 38 ℃) and age<3 months;

? For children of any age, fever repeatedly exceeds 40 ℃;

? Poor sleep or irritability, chest pain.
