What is childhood trauma?

Children with childhood post-traumatic stress have been exposed to one or more traumas during their childhood and have developed behaviors, thoughts, and emotions that last and impair their everyday lives after the incidents have ended.

Types of incidents that can result in childhood trauma

The following are some examples of situations that could be potentially traumatizing?for a child.

  • Institutionalized racism in schools or communities
  • Living with a parent or caregiver who suffers from a serious mental illness
  • The death of a loved one as a result of a variety of factors (e.g., death, divorce, separation)
  • Terrorism or natural disasters
  • Parental conflict?

  • Witnessing or being a victim of domestic abuse is a difficult situation to be in.

  • Financial crisis at home

Signs of Childhood Trauma

  • Withdrawing from family and peers
