The childhood lesson that made Will Smith millions, and how Frank Sinatra used it to do the same…

I know this’ll make me sound like I have an huge ego but:?
(Maybe I do, whatever)?
I often imagine myself as an absolute stallion… the perfect specimen of a man with insane stamina and relentlessness, and with unmatched life-force and maxed-out health levels.?
(Especially since I can run for countless hours, I’m a beast and I rarely get sick)?
But anyway, unfortunately…?
I believe I’ve caught a “cold” in the past few days, and so in the morning now when I’m jogging—what’s usually an effortless run for me is an excruciatingly exhaustive experience.?
For example:?
This morning especially was tough…?
As I remember stepping onto the beach and looking out at the distance I had to cover, while thinking to myself:?
“Oh gosh, do I really have to run that far today?”?
“Of course.” I immediately reassured myself…
And so hesitantly, I started my run with my:?
Feet already hurting,?
My mouth dry,?
And chest as tight as a vice-grip.
Literally every-cell of my being wanted me to stop and go back home, but I didn’t. I kept going.?
And with one painful step after the other…
I eventually got lost inside of my own imagination thinking about my goals, and before you know it the run was over.?
“Phew.”?
This reminds me of a story I once heard Will Smith tell about his experience building a wall as a child, with his dad.?
He said he remembers looking at the 6-foot hole his dad had dug (for the foundation of the wall) and since it was only himself, his brother and his father, he thought the wall would take forever for them to build.?
However…?
They just kept laying brick after brick after brick, one day behind the other (each day after-school) and before you knew it:
The entire wall was done?
and built.?
So that’s when he learned a truly valuable lesson:?
You don’t set out initially to build the biggest, baddest wall ever…
(Because that’s just going to overwhelm you when you think about how far you are from that goal and all the work you’ll have to do)?
Instead, you focus on each brick that you have to lay.?
And you say to yourself:?
“In the next 10 minutes, I’m going to lay the most perfect brick ever laid on the face of the Earth.”?
And, after you do just that…
You do it over and over again until the wall is finished.?

But each time your focus is always on laying the next brick.?
More:?
I honestly think it’s the perfect way to go about business…
(Especially business, in fact)
You don’t consume all your time thinking about how you will build the biggest business ever, instead…
You keep your focus on things you can control.?
Moreover:?
You focus on taking the next step.?
For example:
Focus on the next email you have to send…?
Or that next sales page you have to study…
Or that next person you have to call.?
(Heck, even the next book you have to read.)?
But each time your focus is always on your next step, or on the next “brick you have to lay.”
Just really fall in-love with the process, and pretty soon you’ll have that big business.?
Frank sinatra was a great example:?
He’s known for being a perfectionist…?
And so, in the studio, whenever he was recording a song, he’d record that song over and over until he thought it was perfect. He’d go to extreme lengths to ensure his phrasings were perfect, each line, and the overall “feel” of the song.?
I mean, the guy would drive his team crazy.?
(Sometimes even leaving the studio after finishing a group of songs, then calling his team in the middle of the night to meet up at the studio ASAP, cuz he felt one of the songs could be better.)?
But he’d always place his all into each of his songs, before moving onto the other.?
And each time keeping his focus on the present moment, with the current song he’s recording…?
Then pretty soon the guy has got hundreds of albums recorded, and sold—the guy is a legend.?
Indeed.?
But this is how it works.
And don’t get me wrong:?
I’m not saying you should be a perfectionist…?
But I am saying you should focus on what you can control, and do the best with what you’ve got.?
Enough said.?
