It's funny how, when you start thinking about something, you hear more and more reminders. This week, it's been reflecting on childhood dreams - that dream I had years ago of being a writer, and then that time I tried to record a silly little play on my brother and sister's tape recorder, breaking it in the process - so that the only way they could use it was with half a knitting needle stuck under one of the keys (remember keys on tape recorders!) because otherwise you couldn't press any other key. And now, although it's a million miles from studio sound, I have a microphone, a sound screen, a laptop and digital editing system and can record and post produce audiobooks in my living room (provided too many planes don't go overhead).
Organising my video cameras, I have an old one that is more than twenty years old which is probably just going to have to go in the bin now, when it was a revolution in filmmaking when I bought it. My sister just gave me a sports video camera that's never come out of the box, which reminds me that I do have a waterproof video camera, but I'm not sure the resolution is acceptable any more - and of course my phone has a better video camera than any of them.
We've come so far, so fast it seems sometimes and the big question I keep asking myself is, what if I was starting from scratch right now? When there are so many more opportunities than I could have dreamed of back in my childhood. How would I do things differently??
What I do know is that if I could tell myself way back then that I'd be doing all this now, I'd be thrilled at how cool it all would be!
