The child, the village, the world

The child, the village, the world

The birth of my daughter Filippa changed my life and outlook on life in many more ways than I could describe. Among many others, my personal journey as a mother helped me understand how much we need networks and led to the building of a strong team at Globant so we can continually put forth thoughtful policies and resources to support motherhood (and parenthood in general) in all of its diversity. Last week, which was World Breastfeeding Week, inspired me to share some of this.

At Globant , we designed a journey to accompany Globers throughout the different stages of their lives, and at each stage (Inspire, Train, Hire, Accompany, and Lead) we put in place a variety of programs and initiatives. These include many around parenthood and family planning, which are momentous times for any person of any gender identity who becomes a parent and can affect career choices and paths. For example, extended paternity and maternity leaves, pre-and post-natal sessions with resources to deal with all the feelings and emotions along the way, and much more.?

Parenthood cannot be just about maternity or paternity leave: it is about emotions and support. Just as a parent nurtures a baby, we support our Globers in a time that is so important personally and to help them sustain their careers.?

A significant chapter relates to breastfeeding. Breast milk has multiple benefits, and breastfeeding is a big issue that only lately has been talked about as much as it should. At Globant, we have several initiatives to support it, starting with a constant revision of our offices, aiming to have private and exclusive lactation spaces for extraction and refrigeration. They should have all the necessary conditions, including a fridge for the breast milk, a space for hygiene, and of course a comfortable couch (if you've breastfed, you know what I mean!) These rooms should also allow Globers to donate their breast milk to needy babies, aiming to impact Human Milk Banks as UNICEF and OMS suggest.

Breastfeeding is a big unknown, especially for first-time families. Sometimes it is smooth and easy, while other times, they can face difficulties that often involve doubts, fears, and uncertainty. Knowing firsthand how that is and how it can affect you, we also offer to breastfeed consultancy with specialists that help with knowledge and empathy.

Each of these initiatives, both the more general and the more specific to breastfeeding, has been informed by my journey, and are also open to changes and improvements. I have tried to use what I learned along the way to help Globers in such transcendental moments of their lives and we are all learning along the way. No parent can really know how a child will impact them, not even those who try to plan it all! Each experience is unique, but I know each one can benefit with this safety net. As the African proverb says, “it takes a village to raise a child”. It is my commitment to make Globant a village that cares for its own and, by doing so, fosters a kinder world.?

In US, 54% of working mothers said they need to cut back on their time spent working to care for family, compared to 44% of fathers, according to a 2019 Pew study. Not fair.

Takes a village to raise a little person they say, that's why is so important to feel part of one, that builds from the inner self and soul needs, that grow from the sensation of support and teamwork. So proud to be part of the village that will change the world. #ProudGlober

Can't agree more ... Globant is a village in itself helping women rise and shine !!! Proud of our policies and the thoughtful and most needed breast milk donation....ask a mother whose baby survived due to this.... Kudos to you for bringing in these policies.... thank you!!
