Chicken with Purpose
Nando's South Africa
Home to South Africa's loved flame-grilled PERi PERi chicken
Nando’s chilli isn’t just any chilli. Our African Bird’s Eye chilli is a unique-to-Nando’s quality varietal of African Bird’s Eye chilli that is a cornerstone for the fire and passion that we have at Nando’s.
?This quality African Bird’s Eye chilli, used in Nando’s restaurants to bring you flavourful tender chicken and delicious sauces for in-home use, is sourced from within Southern Africa where Malaria is an overwhelming issue.
?When Nando’s co-founder, Robbie Brozin and Humanitarian, Kingsley Holgate first set off to Mozambique together, neither had any inkling that it would be the start of a long-term philanthropic journey too.
?“I went with Kingsley and it was the first time I was exposed to what malaria really was. I knew about the disease, but when I handed out my first malaria net on that trip and looked into the eyes of the families that the nets would help, I really understood what malaria was about. It was so good for my soul. I loved it. And I got more and more involved, “says Brozin.
?From this life changing experience, Goodbye Malaria was born with the ambition to eradicate Malaria by 2030 within Southern Africa.
?Goodbye Malaria’s flagship programme is LSDI2, a cross-border, regional programme working in South Africa, Eswatini and Mozambique.
?Mozambique, as a high malaria transmission country, shares 3% of the global malaria burden while Swaziland and South Africa are low transmission countries. This makes it a strategic area to tackle if elimination in Southern Africa is to be achieved. Most of the work we undertake is focused on Mozambique because it shoulders the burden of 3% of all Malaria cases worldwide.

?The key malaria intervention of the programme is Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS). A spray that acts as a safety net guarding a home sprayed from mosquitoes. Not only does it protect the community from malaria, but sprayers are recruited locally, creating much-needed employment.
?During the 2020 – 2021 IRS spray season, a dedicated team of over 2 500 (majority female) boots on the ground sprayed 611 940 houses, protecting 2,046,226 people in Southern Mozambique.
“Eliminating malaria by 2030 in Southern Africa is a big dream. But unlike so many big dreams, it’s one that can be achieved. There’s a lot of work to be done; more so with the proliferation of COVID-19. With care, integrity, and true grit, we truly believe as Africans we can say; hamba kahle, sala kakuhle, adios and Goodbye Malaria. For good.” Comments Goodbye Malaria Director, Sherwin Charles
Goodbye Malaria - a social benefit organisation – is an African-run initiative with the goal of eliminating malaria, a preventable disease that still kills a child every 2 minutes. Founded by concerned African entrepreneurs including Robbie Brozin (Co-Founder of Nando’s), Goodbye Malaria believes our generation can create innovative solutions that ultimately change the way the world sees Africa. The initiative facilitates public-private partnerships, bringing together the private sector, the governments of Mozambique, Eswatini and South Africa as well as The Global Fund whilst supporting and catalysing on-the-ground malaria elimination programmes.
