I Help Masters & PhD Applicants Secure Admissions & Funding For Their Studies | PhD Student~Mental Health in Higher Education
I have the pleasure of recapping our recent webinar, where we were graced by the presence of an exceptional Chevening Scholar Michelle Mothibi . Her journey and insights left us inspired and equipped for success.
What's Your Story?
Michelle started with a powerful reminder: every scholarship applicant should have a compelling story. Hers is a testament to resilience and seizing the right opportunities. At 33, after experiencing a career setback, she spotted a Chevening Scholarship advert on LinkedIn. That moment marked the beginning of her transformative journey.
Mastering the Chevening Focus Areas
One of the key highlights was her guidance on navigating the Chevening focus areas, crucial for crafting impactful scholarship essays:
1. Leadership and Influence:
She advised, "Figure out when you were a leader and pick a good example or two examples that complement each other." It's crucial to steer clear of university roles and focus on recent work experiences. Her personal example of volunteering for a mentorship committee and rising to be its leader beautifully illustrates this principle.
2. Networking:
Her advice here was simple but profound: "Write about an event that had a result." She shared a personal anecdote about attending a networking event, which led to a meaningful connection with a director and, eventually, a job interview.
3. Studying in the UK:
Applicants should articulate why they chose their preferred course, using their own words and avoiding university descriptions. The inclusion of a problem statement and researching three universities offering similar courses was recommended. As she wisely put it, "Apply to many universities but don't be too ambitious to apply only to top universities as you may face rejection."
4. Career Plan:
She urged applicants to check events and guests on the UK in Botswana Facebook page and use it to craft a roadmap for their careers.

1 年"I am Kaleem Ullah from Pakistan, having successfully completed my M.Phil in Agriculture with a specialization in Plant Breeding & Genetics. My research focus has primarily been on wheat, where I conducted comprehensive studies under both normal and water stress conditions. This involved analyzing a spectrum of morphological traits as well as quality parameters such as Ash content, Fat content, Protein content, and Gluten composition. I am now seeking a PhD position with a scholarship, aiming to further delve into agricultural research, particularly in the realm of Plant Breeding & Genetics."
