Chevening Networking Essay: How to

I have read many essays from Chevening applicants and given valuable feedback that enabled some applicants win.

The networking and relationship building essay challenges many. I recently did a YouTube Video on how to write all the Chevening essays.

This is how to go about the networking essay.

Consider introducing your essay with a short paragraph of say 3 lines. Here you just tell what you think this professional relationship building is all about and identify core attributes that make it happen.

For each paragraph in the body, identify a professional link you have (say link 1 in the diagram below). Mention this link by name, say, head of department at 加拿大卡尔顿大学 .

Describe briefly the situation in which you met the link. For instance, a freshers' welcoming dinner, where the HoD came to give a keynote address and answer questions from new students.

Tell of the actions you took in line with one of the attributes you mentioned in the introduction. For example, you listened keenly to the HoD's speech and asked questions.

Mention how you linked up (more actions). Maybe by going up to them to follow-up on some issues they addressed.

Briefly explain how you went ahead to maintain this link. Maybe by exchanging contacts and arranging periodic meetups to discuss matters of mutual interest (consider mentioning these by name).

Describe the results of this professional engagement. For instance, the HoD may have linked you to one of their links, say 5 (see the diagram), who offered you a life-changing internship.

Results of these links could be a fundraising opportunity for your startup (with clear amounts mentioned), a collaboration on a named project with clear outcomes, a partnership in a startup with clear impacts, a job that has enabled you to grow professionally, etc.

Repeat this structure while concentrating on different networking skills you have in each link example.
