Chernobyl - April 26, 1986

At 1.23 am on April 26, 1986, disaster struck during a safety test, when the reactor became unstable due to design flaws and operator “negligence”, causing overheating and the eventual meltdown of the reactor’s core. This was followed by explosions that ruptured the reactor, causing significant damage.
Sadly, around 30 operators and firefighters lost their lives within three months of the incident; one person died immediately, another in hospital, and a further 28 from exposure to high levels of radiation. In addition to the 30 persons who lost their lives, many more would develop, and continue to suffer from, adverse health conditions for many years to come.

2 年After watching this series, it made me even more determined to inject health and safety into our organisations. Many of our collegues become careless and negligent because of complacency and thinking they either know it all and they can’t learn more. Any industry professional, especially those interacting with quality & HSE professionals needs to watch Chernobyl to understand the reason why No is No. If you don’t know, ask. Do not play with peoples lives. This documentary / series really altered my view and perception on our roles in industry and how important it is to be competent and stay abreast of time by engaging and learning new technologies and adapting to new norms. If only they followed procedure :( and told the truth to their management, they would be telling a different story today.
