Every year our high school kicks off the football season with a community event. There is a dunk tank, bouncy house, games, fire truck, concessions, etc. The kids have a blast with the games while the high school players wrap up team pictures and take the opportunity to get family photos in front of the inflatable football helmet. Later the youth teams get the opportunity to scrimmage on the varsity field.
The excitement builds as the players run out of the football helmet tunnel. The National Anthem is sung followed by player introductions. The high school players are split into two teams and they scrimmage each other. Following the scrimmage there are fireworks to wrap up the event.
One of the particular memorable events prior to the scrimmage is the Senior autograph table. When my son began playing football, he was excited to go through the line and have the Seniors autograph his poster. Now, the poster is him and his teammates, some of which he's been playing with and/or against since the 2nd grade.
Now he is at the table signing the posters. I went through the line and had a brief conversation with each of the kids. I have watched these kids grow up into young men. Now they are preparing to play what is likely their final season of competitive football. I am proud of them and all of their accomplishments, both on and off the field.
I think back to the second grade when my son started playing and think where did the years go? They say time moves fast. That is so true. Make sure you cherish these moments as soon they will only be a memory.
