Chemical reaction engineering, is concerned with exploitation of chemical reactions on a commercial scale.
It is also known as reaction engineering and it is the management of industrial reactor and conditions to ensure optimal reactor/plant operation.
Moreover, the major objective of this branch of chemical engineering is the successful design and operation of chemical reactors.
And with the information, knowledge and experience acquired from field of studies such as Thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer and economics, they are throughly euipped for the save design of a chemical reactor.
Furthermore, In dealing with chemical reactions, the ultimate goal of a chemical engineer generally include: selection of reaction types, determination of the required reactor size and the specification of the operating conditions.
And in other to achieve this goal, they must have sound knowledge of the rate of chemical reaction, the maximum conversion obtainable, the nature of physical processes interacting with the chemical reaction and the parameters which influences the preceding i.e Temperature, pressure.
The importance of reaction engineering includes the following;
* Chemical reaction engineering is needed in the development of both new and existing technologies.
* It is necessary in speeding up commercialization of new specialty and commodity chemicals.
* It is applied in the development of fuel cells for automobiles.
