There’s no denying that our attention span is ‘dwindling’ – and fast.

According to Google, the average attention span is currently 8 seconds.?

(Down 25% since 2000)

Meaning, when a person visits your website you have about 8 seconds, to grab their attention before they bounce.

This is why every word you write matters.

The reality is:

Your website, specifically your Homepage, is your underpaid online salesperson that never sleeps.

And there is one part of your Homepage that you really need to focus on -

The Headline and Sub-Headline!

  • Headlines are used to hook readers and make them want to know more.
  • The Headline is the first thing a reader sees because it's the first few lines, at the top of the page, written in a bigger font.
  • A subheading is a mini-headline that is found under the main headline to give the reader more information.

Both have to be super clear!

If you confuse your reader with a long, or worse, a vague ‘artsy’ type phrase – they’ll leave and more than likely never return.

If you confuse them, you lose them!

So, what’s the solution?

Well, at the risk of sounding painfully obvious…

You need a simple and clear Headline with a Sub-Headline that states -

"What you do and who you help."

  • The Headline should be around 5 words
  • Sub-Headline should be around 10 words.

The goal is to keep things simple.

So simple that even a fifth-grader could easily understand what you do.

To demonstrate my point, let’s play a game.

(Okay, calling it a ‘game’ might be a stretch.)

Take a look at the following homepage examples and see if you can tell what the company sells in less than 8 seconds.

Ready?

Go: Can you tell what this company sells?

Here's the Headline: Act. Create. Satisfy

Here's the Sub-Headline: Satisfyify is a different kind of satisfying app.

Chances are you took a stab in the dark:

“They’re a SAAS company?…

They sell some sort of app?…

Or maybe they help people be more… satisfied?!”

Either way, you were a tad confused.

And remember, if you confuse them, you lose them.?

They lost me - how about you?

Now, let’s look at some other examples that crush the game.

Can you tell what they do?

Here's the Headline: An Award-Winning Digital Marketing Agency

Here's the Sub-Headline: Paid Media, SEO, Website Design, Content Marketing, CRO. They are based in Washington D.C. and NYC.

When you read this - you know that this agency is good at what they do.

(So much so that they received an award of some kind.)

You know where they’re based, and what services they specialize in.

How about this one?

Here's the Headline: Accelerate your B2B sales process with killer demos.

Here's the Sub-Headline: "Skyrocket your B2B sales process" - Better demos mean faster deals. Speed up your B2B sales process with tailored demos at any stage of the buyer's journey.

You know in reading this that they help you give better demos.

Sign me up!

What about this last one?

Here's the Headline: Nonprofit Marketing Agency

Here's the Sub-Headline: We know Nonprofits

Personally, this one is my favorite.

It's so straightforward - you don't even need to think.

They are a nonprofit marketing agency, got it.

Love it!

___________

As you can see, you don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

You can increase inquiries – and ultimately sales – without dropping thousands on a marketing agency, copywriter, or UX designer.

All you have to do is:

1: Be clear – state what you do and who you help.

2: Be concise – try to boil your headline down to around 5 words. Keep your sub-headline to around 10 words.

3: Be confident – your reader doesn’t care about you (or your business) until you show them HOW you can help. This is not a time to be humble, be confident in what you offer.

Remember, your Homepage can make or break your sales process.

So after you’ve finished reading this, head over to your website and test out some of the concepts I’ve spoken about here.

And if you think your homepage is clear, concise, and encapsulates what you offer…

Yet your bounce rate is higher than 5 hippies in a helicopter?? -

Drop me a private message with a link to your website.

I’d be happy to take a look and give you some feedback.

Thanks for reading,

Chelsea
