Cheeseburger Mindset? What is it?
Few days back, Jim Benson , mentioned in a comment about Cheesburger Mindset and I agreed with what he had to say about it. Since then, I have gotten at least 10 messages asking me what is Cheesburger mindset.
So here I am , trying an attempt to explain it.
The cheeseburger mindset is a term coined by Chris Vallancourt to describe a focus on volume and efficiency at the expense of quality and attention to detail. It is often found in businesses that are focused on short-term gains, and it can lead to a number of problems, such as customer dissatisfaction, product recalls, and employee turnover. It is also about not comprehending what is being said by your customers, or your team members or from any for that matter.
Let me try with some examples:
One example of the cheeseburger mindset in the software development industry is the practice of releasing software that is not fully tested or debugged in order to meet a deadline. This can lead to serious problems for customers, such as security vulnerabilities, data loss, and performance issues.
Another example of the cheeseburger mindset is the use of cheap or low-quality tools and technologies in order to save money. This can lead to problems such as software development delays, increased maintenance costs, and difficulty finding qualified employees.
The cheeseburger mindset can also be seen in the failure to invest in documentation and training for developers. This can lead to problems such as code quality issues, difficulty onboarding new employees, and increased risk of errors.
The cheeseburger mindset can be seen in the practice of ignoring customer feedback. This can lead to problems such as customer churn, lost sales, and reputational damage.
The cheeseburger mindset is a dangerous mindset for any business, but it is especially dangerous for software development companies. Software is a complex product, and even small errors can have serious consequences. When software development companies focus on volume and efficiency at the expense of quality, they are putting their customers and their business at risk.
Imagine a software development company that is developing a new mobile app. The company is under pressure to release the app quickly in order to meet a deadline. In order to save time and money, the company decides to use a cheap and low-quality development platform. The company also decides to cut corners on testing and debugging.
As a result of the company's cheeseburger mindset, the mobile app is released with a number of serious problems. The app is slow and unresponsive, it crashes frequently, and it has a number of security vulnerabilities.
Customers are very unhappy with the mobile app, and many of them uninstall it. The company's reputation is damaged, and it loses sales. The company also has to spend a significant amount of time and money fixing the problems with the app.

This example shows how the cheeseburger mindset can lead to serious problems for businesses. When businesses focus on volume and efficiency at the expense of quality, they are putting their customers and their business at risk.
Now the question is, How to avoid the Cheeseburger Mindset?
First, focus on quality over quantity. It is better to produce a smaller number of high-quality products than a larger number of low-quality products.
Second, pay attention to detail. It is important to take the time to do things right the first time. This includes testing and debugging software thoroughly, using high-quality tools and technologies, and investing in documentation and training for employees.
Third, listen to their customers. It is important to understand what customers want and need, and then to provide them with products and services that meet those needs.
Fourth, be willing to invest in your employees. It is important to provide employees with the training and resources they need to do their jobs well. This will help to ensure that employees are able to produce high-quality products and services.
Key is to not just hearing but comprehending.
Here you go, all about Cheesburger mindset. Hey, I am not perfect. If something is incorrect in this or something is off, please feel free to share. Can you think of more ways to avoid Cheeseburger Mindset?
