Happy New Year! Oh my! It looks like 2024 is upon us more quickly than we ever imagined. We find ourselves in a new place, with some repeat experiences. January 1 is a globally celebrated occasion that welcomes a fresh start, shared anticipation for the possibilities of the coming year, and optimism that can transcend -- or exacerbate differences.
This week, we'll share thoughts about what DEI industry leaders are bracing for in the New Year. It's a tapestry of things: another incomparable and contentious U.S. Presidential Election. The Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games. DEI in Entertainment -- both the big screen and the small screen. Oh, wait...don't forget AI. We've curated some resources to help you stay abreast of all-things-DEI for 2024.

Five Thoughts from SPG
1. Balance will be required in 2024. Meaning, we should keep our fingers on the pulse of what's going on and create distance when needed and to ensure we ward off the feeling of being overwhelmed.
2. Make a list of the celebrities, entertainers, and leaders who are most important to your work or your world. Note what they say when it comes to DEI and social justice as well as what they do NOT say.
3. Take the time to get to know the stories of Olympians who are from other countries. The athlete and their sport are a small window into their larger cultural world.
4. Sharpen your skills in the art of dialogue. Given that folks will feel emboldened to speak on their values through politics, be aware of when you're in a debate, a diatribe, or a welcome dialogue.
5. Just like when social media came, AI has come as more than a trend, but a viable form of communication and expression.
Four Questions from SPG
1. What news outlets have you actively chosen to follow, shun, or explore when it comes to world news and politics?
2. Did you know there is an IOC Refugee Olympic Team? What can we learn from very focused, talented individuals who have had to flee for an assortment of reasons?
3. Is it possible to become an educated electorate without becoming jaded?
4. What are the capabilities of AI, especially this year?
Three Quotes
1. “I think it is very difficult today to have a reasoned public discourse on any controversial subject. Certainly, election years present a complicating factor”.
- John Poindexter
2. “Some people worry that artificial intelligence will make us feel inferior, but then, anybody in his right mind should have an inferiority complex every time he looks at a flower.” - Alan Kay
3. “When you’re feeling overwhelmed or your body is giving you signs that you’re overdoing it: stop, breathe, and remember one thing: everything can wait.” - Alexis Jones
