Cheers to New Beginnings: Dry January Tips

Today many people are embarking on Dry January, a month-long break from alcohol. Whether you’re a first-timer or a repeat it annually, I want to share a few tips I’ve picked up along the way.
Dry January isn’t just about removing alcohol—it’s a chance to pause and explore what life looks like without it. Don’t just subtract alcohol, bars, or friends from your life this month – introduce new options and make it fun. This month is about discovery, not deprivation.
1. Discover Great Alternatives
Finding non-alcoholic beverages has never been easier. Gone are the days of being limited to just water, sodas, and La Croix. With more options hitting the market every year we’re spoiled with choices: NA beers, hop water, CBD sparkling water, pre-mixed mocktails, and more. Check out brands like Athletic Brewing Co, Big Drop, Go Brewing, Kin Euphorics, Seedlip, Recess, Untitled Art, and my personal favorite Lyre’s.? Amalfi Spritz and Phony Negroni were my summer go-to beverages. And don’t forget the garnish! If an old-fashioned gets an orange and cherry, your mocktail should too.?

2. Find a New “Third Place”
For many of us, bars or breweries have served as a “third place” to hang out outside of work and home. When you quit drinking, that place might no longer align with your needs. So, what’s next? Find a new spot to connect with people and unwind. Try a café, gym, park, spa, or even a book club. It’s a great way to discover new activities and connect with people who share your values.

3. Prep for Social Events
You don’t have to skip the party just because you’re not drinking. Bring your own non-alcoholic alternative or—better yet—find a new mocktail recipe (check out r/Mocktails or Zero for inspiration) and bring enough to share with friends. This not only helps you stay on track but also makes your experience more enjoyable for others.

4. What Will You Do With Your Savings?
One of the best side effects of Dry January? The money you save by not buying alcohol. Now’s the time to reward yourself! Consider treating yourself to something special—perhaps a Korean spa day, a Michelin-star dinner, or a fun weekend excursion. You deserve it!

5. If You’re Struggling, You’re Not Alone
It’s normal to feel a bit raw or vulnerable as you adjust. If you’re realizing that alcohol may have been numbing emotional discomfort, consider talking to someone. If you’re not sure where to start, check if your employer offers an EAP (Employee Assistance Program) or try services like TalkSpace or BetterHelp. You don’t have to do this alone.
Here’s to new opportunities, healthier habits, and the chance to discover what truly makes you feel alive. Cheers!
