Check Out this Massive PC Deployment via Intune
The Davis School District (based in Farmington, Utah) is now managing more than 40,000 Windows 10 PCs through Intune – and that number will soon double. You can read about it here.
I get asked a lot, “Hey, if my organization wanted to entirely to the cloud and use Intune for PC and mobile device management – is that even possible?”
The team at the Davis School District is just the latest group to show how possible this is.
Davis is now operating at a scale that is larger than the PC estate of most enterprises, and they are doing this while navigating the unique challenges and circumstances schools have to deal with but which most enterprises don’t have to face. For example, most EDU organizations have to completely rebuild their devices each summer; that means every summer these 40,000 PCs (and soon 80,000) have to be rebuilt from the ground up. A student is also a very different user than a traditional enterprise employee – so, in a lot of ways, the PC experience has to be a lot more robust in EDU scenarios.Aside from the awesome usage, there are a couple specific things I really love about Davis, however:
- Davis let us work closely with their IT team on this deployment and we learned a ton about how to improve our services and make deploying them even easier. Two of our incredible engineers, Robert Nishi and Yegor Abramov, worked exhaustively with the team from Davis, and we're already applying what they picked up on this project.
- The school district has done a lot of great work to allow decisions to be made as close to the students as possible.
- The IT team at Davis is using Windows Autopilot at scale and not wasting a countless number of hours imaging their PCs – they’re doing fully modern OS deployment.
- Davis has expanded from managing 13,000 devices to their current deployment with only minor increases in their IT budget.
- Davis chose PCs over Chromebooks!
- Maybe I’m biased, but I love that Davis County is directly north of the county where I was born and raised. ??
Overall, just take a moment to consider this quote from the case study:
Technology specialists can spend less time on deployment and more time on activities that actually benefit the teachers and their educational efforts. “By going down this path,” explains Reid, “by using Intune and helping the techs timewise, it’s allowed them to become more of a technology coach, if you will, helping faculty on how to use technology in the classroom. That’s really the vision we’re working on, and it’s been very helpful.”
