Check our Nature Communications paper on optimal building renovation
Congratulations to Alina Galimshina for our joint paper entitled “Strategies for robust renovation of residential buildings in Switzerland” just published in Nature Communications!
This paper is the final step of a joint project led by Guillaume Habert (ETH Zurich), together with Sébastien Lasvaux (University of Applied Sciences of Western Switzerland, Yverdon) and Alexander Hollberg (Chalmers University of Technology) with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Based on life-cycle cost analysis models developed by Alina, Alex and Sébastien, we formulate the optimal renovation of residential buildings as a multi-objective optimization problem (costs over 50 years / CO2 emissions), accounting for uncertainties on the future evolution of climate, energy prices, CO2 content of electricity, etc.
Thanks to an original algorithm developed by Maliki Moustapha using surrogate models based on machine learning, a robust Pareto front can be obtained that leads to an optimal solution.
Many thanks to Guillaume for the fabulous opportunity to collaborate on this impactful project!
