Is Cheap & Cheerful IoT - Still Cheerful?
The overwhelming majority of IoT and IIoT solutions are very cost conscious. They use IoT solutions to manage applications that monitor assets, turn “things” on and off, and in general improve the workflow of business and government services. ?
Often the emphasis is on the “cheap”. ?Cheap security strategy is obscurity!
The result is that deployed devices in the field with the assumption that they are unique and of little interest, because after all the solution was developed for the specific purpose and no one knows about it.
However, the deployment is using quite common cheap equipment, and the reality is that many of these components are detectable to hackers.
According to FBI Director Wray. One reason is just to wreak havoc! And when you look at where we deploy cheap and cheerful, you discover that the havoc can mean blackouts, water contamination, and security lapses.
At IoT Evolution next week we will have Retired Brigadier General Robert Spalding with us the author of War without Rules who will speak about 5G.? We are also going to have a “Birds of a Feather” session to talk about actionable items.
If you an IoT implementer I have a request of you. Think about what could happen if someone hacked your system. If it scares you as contemplate the damage to your company, your customers and your country – then book your flight and join us to discuss how to move forward.
I look forward to meeting you there.
