I recently had an opportunity to explore the use of ChatGPT and I must say the results are quite impressive and scary.
Let me indulge you…
In my line of work, it is often required that one write a lot of reports as well as emails on projects that one is managing, and these often take a lot of time. As a result, one might find themselves sometime being late for meetings or failing to meet certain deadlines because more time is spent preparing reports.?So, the curious me, having seen the sudden boom on people sharing their thoughts on the use of Elon Musk’s Chat GPT, I decided to try it out to assist me writing an email and so I typed, ‘ Ask the contractor politely to give you their recovering plan on the lost time’. To my surprise the AI did exactly as it was told – Scary right? – see figure 1 below,?

Well, personally this is scary for me.
I must admit, while technology is meant to help us with executing certain tasks. Technological dependency can make us overly reliant on the technology to the point where we are no longer able to think without it. I mean, think about the last time you even bothered multiplying numbers without using your calculator, and how has that impacted your life? – Well, you literally find yourself needing a calculator to perform even basic numeracy – Think about what I am saying and think deeply about it.
All in all, this innovation is definitely a game changer in that it will definitely make our work easier and more convenient and give us access to information quickly and easily. However, there are also potential downsides to It dependency. For example, people who will rely too heavily on this tool may become less self-sufficient and may struggle to function without it.
Therefore, in my opinion, there is a need to strike a balance in our use of this AI and to be aware of the potential risks and drawbacks of becoming too dependent on it. I have seen in some comments on LinkedIn, where parents say that this will give them more time to spend with their children since it has the potential to do homework for them – But what’s the point of taking children to school then? ?
To leave you with some thoughts, I end this small write-up with a quote by Epicurus (270 BC), a Greek philosopher who says – ‘ The most important consequence of self-sufficiency is freedom’.
The ball is in your hands!
