ChatGPT: What's the Big Deal Anyway?

You've probably heard about ChatGPT - yeah, the smart chatbot that's super good at sounding human. It's like having a chat with a friend who's always ready to help with stuff like finishing work faster, responding to emails, or even writing a piece of code! But what does it mean when we bring this tech buddy into the world of business?

1) Think Smarter, Not Harder

So, to get the most out of ChatGPT, we use something called 'prompts.' These are like guiding questions that help ChatGPT know what we want. This process is a real brain workout, involving skills like breaking down complex problems, spotting patterns, simplifying things, and creating a step-by-step plan to tackle tasks. As more people use ChatGPT, we're seeing a rise in this smarter thinking, which is super helpful for getting work done faster.

2) From Widgets to Wonder Data

Now, here's the kicker: only a few big shot companies like OpenAI, Google, and Meta are actually creating the base for tools like ChatGPT. And as these tools get smarter, they start moving from text to audio, music, and even video. So, businesses are trying to create their own special data to teach these models to do more specific stuff. This is leading to companies focusing less on making things (like widgets) and more on collecting unique data, kind of like building a stage where things happen. This could mean more pressure on workers who are used to just making "widgets."

So, what's my advice to businesses?

The need to think smarter and focus on data is going to shake things up for some companies. To deal with these changes, they might follow a plan like this:

1) Bosses decide on a new plan for the future.

2) The new plan guides the team to work out how to switch things up.

3) There'll be big group meetings to share the new plan.

4) People will get trained up in new areas.

5) Then, the company starts moving in the new direction.

This kind of plan could work for smaller changes, like automating how they pay workers. But for a massive shift like smarter thinking, we need to offer more help and support. This includes:

1) Helping people understand why this change is good for them, not just the company.

2) Making people want to be part of the change.

Remember, employees are not just workers - they're capable of making their own choices.

So, to make this change easier, we need to help people feel like they're part of it - they need to understand why the change is important and how it can help them. It's about helping them see the change from their own perspective, not just from the company's. How can we do this? Well, one way is to have open conversations about the change. This way, people can ask questions, share their views, and feel more confident about the changes ahead. Here are my experiences on open conversations and dialogues.

Siew Onn, I am definitely a keen adopter of AI as a supportive tool - making a difference in our lives. There is a key learning exercise here with using AI. What we obtain out of, for example ChatGPT, is as good as what we enter as prompts. The key here is to communicate with the GenAI model as real as you are communicating with an individual. The precision of the question or the prompt is vital. This goes back to how we communicate with our peers, friends, family or anyone. Many of us fail in ensuring clear articulation of the message. Great write up Siew Onn.
