WOW. Just been reading about ChatGPT, and the possible impact on school essays and assignments. So just typed in my own starter question, about my field of practice, and ......... WOW. Not all 'amazing' WOW, but WOW that it works as well as it does ...... WOW that ChatGPT is nearly right .... WOW about the implications in many, many fields of endeavour ..... and WOW at how dangerous and misleading the results can be.
For a start, it's almost definitely the end of traditional school/uni homework done by essay at home. The answer to my question is entirely plausible, contains all the right terminology, and to a lay person, would probably score quite well when marked. I guess, as CHatGPT AI generates answers from scraping the whole of internet, it would also scrape 'Marking Guides.'
I can see millions of people using ChatGPT to prepare PowerPoint Presentations - on any topic - and confidently deliver, sound knowledgeable, and impress the lay audience. ChatGPT is a godsend for those who know little presenting to an audience who know even less about the topic.
And yet .... there is something human missing. ChatGPT provides a lot of plausible information. But many things are missing. Nuance. Context. For me, what is missing is Practical Application. Missing mostly is 'Why would you want to use X-bar R Charts.' Missing is the intangible, ineffable thing that happens between people. I'm coming to the conclusion that the internet - through the lens of CHatGPT - is the greatest assemblage of information humankind will ever create. But this is not the same as Knowledge.
Of course, while I'd say there is nothing explicitly wrong with the answer to delivered by ChatGPT to my question, it is somewhat misapplied, somewhat misleading, and not particularly practical in translating the information it gave me into a clear 'How to' ........

No doubt ChatGPT will get better - much, much better, and no doubt very quickly. Already now, and increasingly, it will be hard to tell the difference between a ChatGPT response (or other AI tools), and what happens between people.
I believe we are in danger of confusing information with knowledge.
Try ChatGPT for yourself. I would look forward to seeing a lively discussion about the many possible implications, which we can't even guess yet.

1 年Glen, I have been looking at ChatGPT too. I’m amazed at its capabilities. I think it will change the way people search online and will impact the education sector tremendously.

1 年Thanks for sharing Glen, I've checked it out and I have to agree "WOW", I tested it out with preparing some VBA code for a little project I've been working on. I was astonished at what it came up with. I was able to copy and paste and it worked perfectly.
