Launched in November 2022, OpenAI’s ChatGPT took the spotlight for AI-generated content and quickly became an internet sensation amongst many AI and machine learning companies. Now, Google has announced its own AI chatbot called Bard.
While ChatGPT and Bard are designed to perform similar tasks, there are differences between the two. Here’s how the two AI chatbots differ from each other.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI (artificial intelligence) chatbot that uses ML (machine learning) to answer queries in a human-like conversational dialogue. It uses the GPT-3 language model to generate human-created text and formulate responses to user queries. While OpenAI released it on November 30, 2022, the chatbot reached 1 million users within just five days.
Though there is a paid subscription model named ChatGPT Plus, where you can pay $20 for priority access and faster speed, the AI chatbot also comes with a free model. Some popular AI-generated content for ChatGPT includes written codes, product descriptions, blog posts, email drafts, law briefs, translations, social media posts, and so on.
What is Bard?
Currently, in beta testing, Google’s Bard is designed to retrieve information in a simple answer versus a search engine results page. It works quite like digital assistants, such as Alexa and Siri, but comes with links for users to gather more information. This AI chatbot uses Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) and provides more details than the typical Google search.
The second version of LaMDA uses less computing power and can scale for more users and artificial intelligence development companies. In addition to that, Bard is also planning to introduce a personal assistant that will help with an array of tasks, such as booking vacations and finding existing reservations. At the moment, Bard only has a free model and will be launched officially in the coming weeks.

Differences between ChatGPT and Google Bard
The main feature of ChatGPT and Bard will be similar, where users have to type in a query to receive a human-like response. However, the key difference between the two is the data source. While Bard continually draws the latest information from the internet, ChatGPT ends with 2021 data.
This simply means that Bard will have more real-time data than ChatGPT. It uses LaMDA for dialogue applications and will create more chunks of information. Whereas, ChatGPT uses GPT 3.5 and creates content in a single text prompt.
ChatGPT vs Google Bard
It turns out that next-gen chatbots could disrupt the way search queries are made and machine learning companies work. Both ChatGPT and Bard have taken the internet world by storm ever since they have been unveiled. This simply means that search engines are going to be more interactive and human-like than ever. While ChatGPT has taken the initial step, Google Bard is not far behind. But who’s leading the AI race?
While Bard is still under testing, ChatGPT is already in the AI game. In fact, it has taken the lead by integrating conversational-style answers months before Google Bard is even launched. Also, Microsoft announced a partnership with OpenAI. The traffic for Microsoft’s Bing has reportedly increased after the announcement of the ChatGPT integration. So, Google will have to strive hard to compete with ChatGPT, which has already achieved 100 million visits so far.
Outlook
Both chatbots are incredibly new for marketers, programmers, and artificial intelligence development companies. This means that they may make mistakes and produce content that crosses ethical and legal lines. Still, these AI-powered bots are figuring out their best use cases. Both of them are incredibly impressive and could revolutionize how we search online. However, this still remains an unexplored frontier as we are just beginning to experience the new AI revelation.
