ChatGPT vs DeepSeek, first impression

DeepSeek R1, developed by the Chinese AI company DeepSeek, has emerged as a formidable competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT, particularly the o1 model. Both models excel in tasks such as mathematical problem-solving, programming, and natural language inference. Notably, DeepSeek R1 achieved a 97% accuracy in mathematical problem-solving and outperformed 96% of human participants in programming tests, showcasing its advanced capabilities.

I got play around with DeepSeek and here what it looks like

I happen to do some reading and I see DeepSeek R1 offers few advantages over ChatGPT:

  1. Affordability: DeepSeek R1 is free for regular users, and its API costs are approximately 27 times lower than those of ChatGPT.
  2. Open Source: Being open-source, DeepSeek R1 allows developers to access and modify its model weights, enabling fine-tuning and building upon the existing model. In contrast, ChatGPT's models are proprietary, restricting external modifications.
  3. Transparent Reasoning: DeepSeek R1 provides insights into its reasoning process, offering a more transparent approach compared to ChatGPT, which often operates as a "black box," delivering final answers without revealing the underlying thought process.

Observation 2:

DeepSeek R1 and ChatGPT 01 each have their strengths and weaknesses. In mathematical reasoning, DeepSeek R1 often outperforms ChatGPT 01.

For instance, ChatGPT 01 excels in language-related tasks, particularly in English composition. This proficiency is likely due to OpenAI's extensive access to native English speakers who contribute to the model's development through human reinforcement feedback. On the other hand, DeepSeek's creators are primarily Chinese, with Mandarin as their first language, which may influence the model's performance in English language tasks.

Conclusion:

China's rapid advancements in artificial intelligence are evident with the emergence of models like DeepSeek R1, which has garnered significant attention for its performance and efficiency. This surge in competition is beneficial, as it compels all stakeholders to accelerate their improvements in AI technology. Given these developments, it's worthwhile to explore DeepSeek R1 firsthand, as it may offer superior solutions for certain challenges.
