As ChatGPT, the conversational AI sensation swept the world with its extraordinary abilities, eyes were fixated on Google to see how the tech behemoth would react to the potential rival to its search supremacy.
And then, Bard emerged - Google's very own chatbot, touted by CEO Sundar Pichai as a union of "the world's knowledge and the intelligence, power, and imagination of our extensive language models."
In a blog post, Pichai showcased Google's groundbreaking work in AI, including their 2017 game-changing paper on Transformer technology and the advancement of diffusion models, which he claimed are the backbone of many of today's generative AI applications.
These generative applications have been making waves in the AI arena, with text-to-image, text-to-video, and even text-to-music platforms taking center stage.
Tech enthusiasts have eagerly awaited Google's answer to ChatGPT since OpenAI's product hit public testing in November.
How ChatGPT Works
With ChatGPT, you can enter prompts and receive written responses that mimic human language, thanks to OpenAI's cutting-edge machine-learning technology, GPT3. This tool has been leveraged for various purposes, including the composition of essays and articles, taking exams, translating text, and even writing computer code.
Understanding the Capabilities of Google's Bard AI
The mystery surrounding Bard, Google's latest AI creation, has everyone buzzing. Currently only being tested by a select group of outside testers, the tech giant is keeping tight-lipped about its capabilities. However, according to CEO Sundar Pichai's blog, Bard will use internet information to provide "fresh, high-quality responses." This sets it apart from ChatGPT, which relies on a vast data set limited to 2021 knowledge.

Like ChatGPT, Bard promises to explain complex concepts, like space discoveries, in simple terms for a child to understand. It also aims to handle everyday tasks like party planning and fridge-based lunch suggestions. However, it's still being determined if Bard can match ChatGPT's ability to write longer prose.
Pichai touts Bard as a "launchpad for curiosity" and a "creative outlet." After a period of testing, the AI will be widely available later this year. Its unveiling comes hot on the heels of Microsoft's announcement to invest billions in OpenAI, a company they already had a $1 billion stake in.
AI's potential to revolutionize the world, just like personal computers, the internet, and smartphones, has analysts and Google CEO Sundar Pichai excited. He's been championing the importance of AI for the past six years, with LaMDA, the "Language Model for Dialogue Applications," being the latest byproduct. Google plans to integrate LaMDA and other AI advancements into its search engine to provide more helpful answers to billions of users.
No timeline has been given, but Pichai hints that these tools will soon be deployed in Google's search. In addition, Google's recent investment in and partnership with AI start-up Anthropic, led by former OpenAI leaders, solidifies their commitment to the field.
