ChatGPT: A Tool, Not a Replacement for Business Advisors

ChatGPT: A Tool, Not a Replacement for Business Advisors

Yesterday afternoon, I had the pleasure of attending a meeting with a group of business advisors. During our discussion, the topic of chatGPT and AI arose. While we had previously discussed the potential impact of this technology on our industry, the recent buzz in the media has caused concern among our group. We decided it was necessary to seriously consider how chatGPT could impact our businesses, whether it presents a threat, an opportunity, or both.

As the only member who has extensively used chatGPT, I shared my experience with the group. I was introduced to chatGPT by a colleague in the BIM world, Sam Oliver, back in February. As a dyslexic, I saw the potential for chatGPT to help me create clear and structured content. I started asking it simple business questions, and it delivered good, generic content. As I asked more complex questions, I found that it could still provide clear, structured content that conveyed my personality and approach. I even used chatGPT to rewrite this very article for a LinkedIn post which took over 30 minutes to write and less than 1 minute for chatGPT to rewrite.

Over the past three weeks, I have used chatGPT to create a library of viewpoint articles on different business issues and to produce ad-hoc articles as topics arise that require an immediate response. One unique feature of chatGPT is that it remembers what you’ve written about in previous chats and adds content from those chats to new ones. It's almost becoming self-aware!

Despite the fear-mongering and Luddite reactions in the media, chatGPT won't put consultants and advisors out of work. It's a tool that can help speed up the creation of content, but it can't replace the insight and experience that business advisors provide. Generic business advice, whether from chatGPT or other sources, should come with a health warning. It provides general recommendations, but it's not tailored to a specific business or situation.

The reality is that technology has created more jobs than it has destroyed. And while chatGPT and AI may automate certain tasks, they also create new opportunities and industries. We can learn from history that resistance to technology and progress often leads to revolution. It's important to embrace evolution and leverage technology to improve our businesses and industry.

In addition, chatGPT may help people realize that the commercial world is far more complex than they think. It may even encourage them to call in an expert with decades of business and commercial experience. As a business advisor, I provide advice that's specific to your business. It may be more expensive than generic advice, but it's considerably less expensive than implementing a plan that doesn't match your specific business environment.

While chatGPT may be helpful in certain areas, it still requires human input and oversight. As a business advisor, I believe it's important to create a foundation for any business plan or strategy. ChatGPT can then be used to speed up the process of creating content, but it can't replace the foundational work.

In conclusion, while chatGPT may have a place in any business, it's important to remember that it's a tool, not a replacement for human insight and experience. Business advisors provide tailored advice that's specific to your business, and that can't be replaced by generic recommendations. Technology should be embraced and leveraged to improve our industry, not feared.
