Will ChatGPT solve all your Salesforce admin challenges?

ChatGPT has taken the world by storm since its release on 30 November 2022; due to its ability to so convincingly create human like responses to a variety of request ranging from writing poems, limericks, and haikus to constructing well written technical articles (I insist this is not one of them!). There are many examples where whole newspaper articles have been written by ChatGPT and you only know this when it is revealed at the end of the article (example)
Let's have a look at how it can help a Salesforce admin in their daily role through 7 examples.
1. Helping with Salesforce Configuration
Let's start by asking it for some advice on a simple piece of Salesforce configuration, to create a field.
The above is indeed true but only in Salesforce Classic which has been superseded by lightning over the last 6 years. Chat GPT uses a huge swath of data up to 2021 so we'd expect it to be a little out of date but not this much. Overall, not very useful for an admin.

2. Helping to debug a flow
Let's ask for some advice on debugging flows. ChatGPT gives a high level overview of some options for debugging a flow which are quite useful as a starting point however it's unlikely to supersede Google for tasks like this for now.

3. Helping to debug a formula
This is a real strength of ChatGPT. It explains where I have gone wrong and suggests a new formula. You can see many other examples online of where it has correctly debugged formulas in Salesforce and elsewhere.

Incidentally ChatGPT is also capable of writing code / formulas to a surprising good standard, see example here.
4. Writing Salesforce code
Let's ask for some help in writing a simple trigger. to update a Boolean field on an Opportunity when the amount exceeds a certain value (you would obviously not normally use a trigger for this). This is very impressive although is a simple example where the wider framework and code structure has not been considered. Is it time for us developers to worrry?

5. Helping research Salesforce functionality
Let's imagine we want to understand more about Dynamic forms and want to see if ChatGPT can help.
Although most of the text is broadly accurate it doesn't really explain that dynamic forms allow fields to dynamically appear on page layouts. It does mention some objects that it can be used on but as the data sources are 2021 and back it won't contain the latest releases that open this up to addition objects (e.g. Winter 23 release update to enable for standard objects). Using Google would get to a better result.

6. Writing internal Comms
Let's test ChatGPT with some more creative writing. Let's imagine we have a Salesforce launch coming up and we need some help with writing the announcement email to the wider business. This is where ChatGPT excels. It can take detailed requirements for the comms and constructed a well written article. It will require some modifications but as a time saver this is a real game changer.

7. How do I create a custom grid in Salesforce?
If you need a Salesforce custom grid you should of course simply go to the AppExchange and find the best grid app in the world. You could however ask ChatGPT and it would again fall foul to its tendency to mention Salesforce Classic which makes up a very small number of orgs these days.

In Summary
ChatGPT will be able to save Salesforce admins lots of time with any creative content to be sent out to users and also with formula and code. It is on the whole not yet ready to help with Salesforce config advice due to its data sources being 1-2 years old but it's only a matter of time until it can help in this area too.
