ChatGPT Restored in Italy: Enhanced Data Privacy Measures Implemented
The artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, ChatGPT, has been reinstated for users in Italy after addressing data privacy concerns, as confirmed by Italy's data protection authority, Garante, on Friday.
Italy had blocked access to ChatGPT at the end of March, citing worries about how the chatbot processed and stored user data. The reinstatement follows changes implemented by OpenAI, the US-based and Microsoft-backed company behind ChatGPT, to meet various data privacy conditions.
Garante stated that ChatGPT is now available "with enhanced transparency and rights for European users." OpenAI's website has been updated to provide increased transparency on how the chatbot processes user data. Users now have specific opt-out rights, allowing them to disable the use of their conversations for training ChatGPT's algorithms.
In response to concerns about child protection, the platform has introduced checks to safeguard users under 13, with age verification required for those accessing the site from Italy.
An OpenAI spokesperson expressed delight at ChatGPT's availability for users in Italy, emphasising their commitment to protecting personal data.

The new data protection options were also visible when accessing the platform from Germany.
Additionally, the site now includes a notice alerting users that ChatGPT may generate inaccurate information about "people, places, or facts."
Italy had taken a notable step by becoming the first Western country to take action against ChatGPT in March. The country's data protection watchdog argued that developers lacked a legal basis to justify the storage and collection of users' data for training the site's algorithms. Criticisms also included the inadequate handling of inaccurate information and the platform's potential harm to children with "absolutely unsuitable answers."
