ChatGPT in an IT Recruitment World

ChatGPT in an IT Recruitment World

Hello dear LinkedIn network, it's been a while since I wrote an article but I'm happy to start sharing more insights frequently. I've been wanting to share my experiences on "ChatGPT in an IT Recruitment World" for some time now. And here it ??. This article can be useful for recruiters, hiring managers and candidates.

ChatGPT is Next Level

For those who know me, know that I have a big fascination for AI. From movies like the Matrix, to writing academic papers to working for cool AI-driven startups like skeeled. So I have been in touch with AI in various forms, but I have to say that I have seen nothing like ChatGPT. It truly is a game changer: it can do everything. You can even save time by letting ChatGPT reply to texts of your girlfriend (I really tried this!):

Good morning, my love! ?? Wishing you a day as bright and beautiful as your smile. Can’t wait to see you later. ????
#chat gpt ??
Haha, you’re too clever! ?? It’s actually me, not ChatGPT. But if they could send you messages, I’m sure they’d say something just as sweet. ????

All jokes aside. What does this mean for IT Recruitment? I'll give you a few commands that I use daily.

As a Hiring Manager

The technical part of the recruitment process mostly sits with the hiring manager to assess. I have to say that I am a proud geek ?? so I'm very involved in the technical part as a recruiter as well. In essence, they mostly let a solution architect drive these conversations, but what if you don't have a solution architect in house?

What questions can I ask a Java Developer to test if he or she is senior enough?

1. Core Java Concepts:

  • Can you explain the principles of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP)?
  • What are the differences between abstract classes and interfaces in Java?
  • Explain the concept of method overloading and method overriding.
  • Discuss the importance of exceptions and how Java handles exceptions.

2. Advanced Java Topics:

  • Describe the differences between checked and unchecked exceptions.
  • Explain the purpose of the "volatile" keyword and when to use it.
  • What is multithreading, and how do you achieve thread safety in Java?
  • Discuss the benefits of using Java's Stream API for data processing.

The list goes on but pretty spot on! As a candidate with just 5 years of experience in a technology I would recommend using ChatGPT to refresh yourself on a few concepts. I've seen many candidates fail because you need to be quick to explain these concepts and able to connect the dots. The longer you can explain certain topics, the more senior you can show yourself.

Will ChatGPT Replace Recruiters or Developers?

I can't see IT Recruitment without ChatGPT anymore. I use it every day. Does this mean it will replace recruiters? No, I don't think so.

ChatGPT can do a lot, but it doesn't have emotional intelligence. As of yet I don't see them making an assessment if the candidate is a culture fit or really able to persuade a candidate in signing for your vacancy. Building a good relationship with your candidate is essential.

Same thing for developers. You can generate code via ChatGPT but the human side is more important than ever. All my last developer vacancies I had to focus on finding people centric developer. The idea of shy developers only wanting to code in a dark room far away is a thing of the past. The modern developer is someone that is part of a team, loves humor, is able to drive a business forward and strong in stakeholder management.

Great piece! I love it. Not using tools like this will definitely put you at the end of the row. We can argue loads on (lack off) regulations, but it is very much time to start embracing these tools. If you don’t they will bulldozer you to the ground in just a couple of years.
