Is ChatGPT really all that?

I have read so many articles in the past few weeks about how ChatGPT was going to take all the IT jobs and revolutionize the world. I thought, ok, lets take it for a spin. I opened it up and it seemed eager enough to do amazing things for me – I just had to know how and what to ask. I was lost. I could not think of anything I do at work or home that AI could do better than RI (real intelligence, aka my brain). I started doing google searches as to what amazing things it had done. Google was my AI friend. I found out that email scams had increased due to ChatGPT, phishing, etc. It does that well. Great. I found out that college students were using it to “cheat” by having ChatGPT write papers for them (is it really cheating or “innovation”?) I literally found no earth shattering use. I asked my husband, also in IT, what has ChatGPT done for you? He told me he asked it for some interview questions to ask to assist his process. He also told me Google could provide those but ChatGPT could do it more concisely and categorize them. I see that, it saved him maybe an hour if that. At my company, Archer, we help customers with Risk and Compliance and many other processes via an amazing software offering. One of our customers was able to use ChatGPT and our form to get the necessary industry information to populate the form and necessary sources. That is amazing. How much effort did it take and is it widely applicable, I do not know but we are exploring it. Will it replace anyone, doubtful.
In my job as a Professional Services consultant, every day I meet with customers to determine how to help them be more productive and compliant in their roles. Then I design or modify Archer applications to meet their needs. ChatGPT will not be replacing me anytime soon. I am interested to see if I could get ChatGPT to learn how to write custom objects in javascript or XMLTs??That may be worth a try. Everything I read says it may take more debugging time than it would have taken to just write the code.
I do know that ChatGPT will not send all the IT workers to start flipping burgers. It won’t clean my house or cook dinner. Maybe I can ask it to write the next bestselling novel. Hmm..
