ChatGPT as a Programmer Buddy: Using AI Language Models to Improve Problem-Solving and Productivity

Recently, while working on a project and coding, I've noticed that I've been using ChatGPT more and more and getting better results. Yes, I haven't been coding very often in recent projects, but I'm trying to keep my skills up.

I was surprised when I noticed that ChatGPT I can use as a buddy for my tasks. I don‘t remember who said to the programmer – have a buddy. It means you have someone to speak with and tell the problem you are working on. And how it is fascinating when you are telling the problem and finding the solution by yourself. It is because you have to formulate the problem correctly, to structure it to explain to the buddy. Without formulating the problem, you potentially will not get the expected answer. The best thing is if you tell nonsense to your buddy, he/she will ask questions to set you on track and to understand your problem. Using ChatGPT, you don‘t have such a luxury – ChatGPT will propose something stupid for you, as you asked incorrectly.

While finding a human buddy might not always be possible, ChatGPT can be an excellent alternative. I used to work on nights on my coding projects, and finding a buddy at 11:30 PM is quite challenging, and the ChatGPT is a perfect solution.

But to have such a buddy requires additional experience and skills. You have to understand your problem to articulate it correctly. If you don’t articulate it correctly, you get incorrect answers and don’t move further. And you should be aware that what you should get to understand is correct. And here, we can face a big issue, especially junior programmers who don’t have the required skills and experience. They can overuse generated code, which can be an issue in integrating and maintaining code.

I am keen to advance my skills with such new AI tools as ChatGPT and see how to increase my productivity. And, of course, it is a good thing to have a buddy at 11:30 PM.
